Better In Some Ways, But Not Quite "Ultimate"

posted 6 years ago

The PetMate "Ultimate Litter Scoop" has a much longer handle than traditional scoops, which is a big plus. This makes it easier to reach into the litter box and enables the "scooper" to bend over instead of having to get down to box-level. However, the bending may be harder on the scooper's back! Moreover, if your cat likes to clear away the litter and "go" directly on the bottom of the litter box (like some of my cats do), it becomes necessary to get to ground level to be able to remove the used litter (negating the value of a long-handled scoop).

I don't think the curved design is as effective as square or rectangular. I find the latter better at reaching into corners and removing used litter.

The serrated edge is a big drawback. Instead of allowing a "smooth" sweep of the box, it made it more difficult. I suppose this is partly attributed to the fact that I use clumping/scoopable litter, and it can be quite hard to remove when stuck on the bottom of the litter pan. More damp litter stuck to this scoop compared to the others I use--and the serrated edge will probably make it more difficult to clean/sanitize the scoop itself.

I also think the long slots are TOO WIDE, especially considering how fine-grained many scoopable litter brands are. This suggests that some of the features that are good for scooping regular litter can be drawbacks when using scoopable litter--and further suggesting that there needs to be an "ultimate scoopable cat litter scoop" and an "ultimate nonscoopable cat litter scoop"!

The price (around $6.00) is reasonable, especially if the heavy plastic (or whatever the material is) is more durable than other scoops. This scoop is NOT flimsy, so should hold up well (or at least better than many/most others).

Overall, I think this "ultimate" litter scoop is a movement in the right direction, but doesn't quite live up to its name.

Pros: Long Handle; Sturdy Plastic/Material

Cons: Curved/rounded is less effective than square/rectangular; slots are too wide

Iams ProActive Health Multi-Cat Chicken & Salmon Cat Food

I have 3 cats and they love this food. They eat less and walk away with a full belly. Eating less means pooping less and less litter. All around a great choice for my cats.
