Face it. The best way to avoid and prevent litter box odor is to CLEAN THE LITTER BOX!!! When you start adding fragrance and so-called deodorizers, all you're doing is attempting to fool your nose into accepting dirty conditions. I know of a cat who had recurrent bladder infections from using a dirty litter box.
But, if you're washing out the box once a week and putting in fresh litter and scooping the box daily, and you still want to try to keep odors at bay, you could try Smelleze. I tried it with my multiple cats/multiple cat boxes, and it is way too expensive - and didn't do anything noticeable.
If you have just one cat, it might work for you - if you use more than the package suggests. Smelleze comes in a jar and is, I believe, Zeolite granules. Zeolite is an odor "adsorber" used in all kinds of environmentally friendly products for deodorizing cars, closets, and sneakers - and it has worked for me in those applications, so I gave it a try in the litter boxes.
It is recommended to mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup into the litter in the box - either fresh litter, or as a mid-week refresher. Maybe my cats perceived an improvement, but I did not.
Pros: environmentally friendly
Cons: not effective for multiple cats
