Hairball remover
posted 5 years ago
Ive tried just about everything to help with my cats hairballs. Lucky used to have them at least a couple times a week. Now that ive put him on a different food it has seemed to help, but this hairball remover doesnt seem to make much of a difference. To have it help you need to use it alot and the tub is small. Its costly and to buy it all the time is to hard. I didnt care for it.
Pros: Seems to help
Cons: cost and doesnt last long

Just started using
posted 5 years ago
I just recently started using this. When I was on vacation last week my pet sitter called to say one of the cats and pooped outside of the litter box and it was slightly bloody. The vet said it was likely that one of the cats had trouble passing a hairball and recommended using a hairball remedy gel along with extra brushing. It's been a week and so far, so good. Plus, both cats love the taste! It's actually hard to give to them because they'll push each other out of the way to get to the tube.
I don't recommend using these frequently or on a permanent basis because they can prevent fat soluble vitamins from being absorbed.
Petromalt is also an old-school treatment for rabbit "hairballs," but I will not use this on rabbits. Rabbit hairballs become compacted and dry on the inside and extra fluids are needed to get into the mass and break it up. Petroleum hairball products coat the mass and prevent water from getting in, so the hairball can't get broken into smaller, easier to pass pieces. That's a bad deal for the bunnies.
Pros: My cats love it, may help them pass hairballs
Cons: May prevent absorption of fat soluble vitamins
