Created by an animal photographer, the photographs of the various breeds are spectacular. Each two page spread has a full-page photograph of the breed and the facing page contains a brief description of how the breed is believed to come into existence, a physical description and a temperment description. Although the author wisely points out that this is a book either for dog lovers that will appreciate the beautiful pictures or someone beginning to investigate the type of breed of dog that would be best suited for their family, I am afraid this might be all the research people might do--falling in love with the picture. It would be a plus if she had listed the 'cons' of each breed. For example, she does a beautiful job describing the Samoyed (there is a Sammie who stole my heart!), but it would have been such a good thing if she had stressed that this dog, while a sweet family dog, needs lots of exercise!!! This isn't a dog that taking a quick walk around the block is good enough. But, it is still a lovely book.
