Good substitute for grit.

posted 6 years ago

It's been recommended that birds that hull their seed do not need grit. And their is riskof impaction if a bird eats too mch grit. Pigeons and doves do not hull their seeds so they do need grid and being the grit is being used constantly theirs little risk of impaction as the grit eventually grinds down and needs replenishing.

Sed hulling bird would need like 9 pieces of grit maybe twice in their lives so do risk impaction.

Oyster shells provide a good substance that will grind down and digest providing essential calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals.

I keep a separate dish high up in the cage to avoin contamination with feces.

Pros: provides minerals and keeps the gizard in good health without fear of inpaction.

Cons: None in my experience

For good health

posted 5 years ago

this is a great source of calcium and they love it. i have to be careful to only give them a bit everyday. i have found that if i give them a cupful they will eat a cupful and that is not good. a bit everyday is perfect. good for their bones and general health and a must for breeder female to keep their calcium supply adequate

Pros: great source of calcium

Cons: may overdo

Add some to grit

posted 5 years ago

My late cockatiel and lovebird (they were best buddies) seemed to enjoy digging into the grit/oyster shells and crunching it. I'm convinced that it helped them to stay healthy for a long time.

Pros: Helps to round out a bird's needs

Cons: A lot ends up on the cage floor
