I find them very attractive and unique

posted 6 years ago

Gourd birdhouses are really neat. I have not made one myself but know of people who do... it's made by hollowing out the inside of the gourd through a circular hole big enough for songbirds to get in and out of. The hang from tree, and VOILA! Birdhouse au naturale! I think they are beautiful, very asthetically pleasing. Birdhouses made out of gourds are sort of an old fashioned remedy I suppose, that is meant to be interesting and appealing to wild birds. There are at least 6 or 7 gourd birdhouses that have been hung up recently at the lake by my house, so I will try to update to let everyone know if the birds nest in them this coming spring.

Pros: don't have to destroy a tree or create platic to make this birdhouse

Cons: not known so far

Natural and functional

posted 6 years ago

Birdhouse gourds are the coolest things. I used to work on a farm where we grew the gourds. Unfortunately, people weren't really into them or didn't know what to do with them other than use them for fall decorations with their pumpkins. (they are good for that as well - with their green color and funky shapes).
It is easy to dry them out and turn them into a birdhouse, however, you need the right space to do it in. (ie a dry spot that you can leave it for several months). I've had some that I dried out years ago and intended to paint and give as gifts and finally painted one this year. A little shellac and it's good to put outside and wait for the birds to arrive in the spring. They can also be left natural, of course. They are very durable as well, but can be hard to clean out if birds build a nest inside.

Pros: natural and functional

Cons: not having a yard to hang it in

My grandparents used to grow these!

posted 6 years ago

Years ago my grandparents grew gordes. They can be painted to make the birdhouses look cheery. I've seen several of them hanging on poles as well.

Pros: various shapes

Cons: None

Wonderful idea

posted 6 years ago

I think that this is a wondeful idea. Very cheap way to feed the birds and make them comfortable at the same time. This would be a good class project for some munchkins to do.

Pros: cheap

Cons: none
