Works well for bigger birds
posted 5 years ago
These work for bigger birds, and help make it more comfortable for you to have them perch on you. Sharp claws often poke right through your clothing and really hurt.
It is just like a dog nail clipper, but on a smaller scale.
For smaller birds, like cockatiels, I would recommend a simple human fingernail clipper. That way you minimize cutting the quick. This is important as birds do not have much blood in their bodies. I always keep some styptic powder on hand for accidental over-clips.
The only difficulty is restraining the bird while clipping the nails. I found that a used toilet tissue roll works great for preventing sore bites! Just hold the bird firmly in one hand, covering the other claw to prevent nicking it, put the roll over the bird's head and gently holding it there, and then have someone help with the clipping. It is much less stressful for the bird (since it can't see what is happening), and you will get less bitten (which hurts a lot).
After you are done, let the bird recover. When it fluffs out its feathers and begins preening itself, it is recovered. It releases a lot of stress. If the bird stays all ruffled and looks mad, you need to wait as it is still recovering. Don't interfere.
Pros: Keeps nails trim
Cons: Can cut too deep

Work well if you are willing to clip
posted 5 years ago
These nail clippers do work well, they cut cleanly and I don't get any split nails, but clipping toenails on little tiel sized feet is not easy. I would only reccomend these to someone who was familiar with how to clip bird's nails. If you aren't sure you can do it, take them to the vet to have it done.
Pros: The clip cleanly
Cons: It's not easy to clip tiel toenails
