Helped my Fearful Dog
posted 5 years ago
My puppy was terribly afraid of barking dogs when we first got her. She would try to flee and claw her way back into the house. I initially tried using food to counter-condition her and make her associate barking dogs with a positive thing (food). But she was so scared that she would shut down completely and not even accept food. So I purchased this CD. It has 17 different tracks of noises of things that dogs may be fearful of. The idea is to begin playing the CD at a barely audible volume when the dog is eating or having a positive experience so that he/she does not show any fear when hearing the trigger sound. Gradually the sound level is increased (as the dog is having a positive experience) until the dog hears the trigger sound at a normal volume and does not react. It worked wonderfully with my puppy in overcoming her fear of barking dogs. Instructions are included and should be followed closely. Some other trigger sounds included on the CD include babies crying, fireworks, kennel sounds (barking dogs), sirens, thunderstorms, traffic, trains, and machine sounds. Our success did not happen overnight, but it did happen with patience and time.
Pros: Contains a wide variety of sounds
Cons: Must be used properly and consistently to be effective
