A very sad, but very necessary, book!

posted 6 years ago

Oh my. . . Shelter Dogs is a really good book that I think every American should see. The book consists of beautiful black and white, full page portraits of dogs at kill shelters. The pictures seem to capture the spirit of the dogs. . . as beautiful creatures who have met a cruel fate but who continue to perservere. The end credits in the book give follow ups on what happened to the pictured animals, and unfortunately, a few were euthanized.... but it brings home the point and shows the big picture of the problem of pet overpopulation in America, which is why I think everyone should see this book. Please everyone, spay and neuter! And, don't breed or buy while homeless pets die! One browsing through this book will bring home the reality of how important shelter work is!

Pros: Beautiful photography

Cons: A few of the dogs pictured in the book were euthanized, and seeing their pictures tears me up

Tear jerker

posted 6 years ago

This is a wonderful, inspiring book that I highly sugest checking into, but you may shed a tear or two. Its packed full of great pics taken of shelter dogs, the dogs eyes seemed to be captured in every photo. I would like to see other shelters publish books of this nature. It warms the heart and soul. Maybe she will do a second writing, I hope.

Pros: great pics

Cons: a little sad

Book of photos of shelter dogs

posted 6 years ago

The book is primarily photos of shelter dogs. It is a little sad though, because you see all these sweet shelter dogs' faces and expressions...but not all of them made it (as noted in the back of the book where there are notes on each dog). But it reminds you that every shelter dog is unique, special and deserving so I think it's worth looking at and sharing with others.

Pros: Photos of many shelter dogs

Cons: Primarily photos (not much text)

Beautiful

posted 5 years ago

I have had this book on my wishlist for ages. Every time I go to the bookstore, I will look at the pictures and read it over and over again, but I don't own it yet (don't know why...).

This book has beautiful pictures of dogs that have come into the shelter system. I especially like the part at the end that tells you what happened to the dogs. Some were adopted, some euthanized. It really hits home that sometimes, the most gorgeous, sweet dog still gets put to sleep just because of space...

Pros: beautiful pictures

Cons: none

This book will get to you

posted 5 years ago

This ninety-six page book features some unbelievably beautiful black and white photos of shelter dogs. The author/photograher got some great shots. The photos are reason enough to pick up the book. But, the really amazing part of this book is the text. The author wrote a brief introduction including her personal shelter experiences and how and why the book came to be. I had some trouble not tearing up. She also includes a 'Who's Who' at the back of the book with information on the dogs--breed, age, a bit about the dog, and whether they were adopted or eventually euthanized. Likewise, some of those are tough to read.

Pros: Absolutely heartbreaking--really 'gets' to you

Cons: Would have preferred the dog's information was listed with the dog, not at the back of the book
