Rescuing love

Mark Levin's book, RESCUING SPRITE: A DOG LOVER'S STORY OF JOY AND ANGUISH, is written from the heart. Levin is transparent in his journey with his adopted dog, Sprite, and allows the reader to share in his vulnerability. It is obvious that Levin is no expert on dogs or dog behavior, but he does not pretend to be. Instead, he simply and honestly presents his experiences and feelings in relationship to his two dogs.
Sprite, the adopted dog that Levin's family welcomed, lived with them for only a brief span of time, but changed their lives forever.

Perhaps the greatest weakness of this book is Levin's seeming naivety about the lives and fates of homeless animals in this country. While he does acknowledge the dedication and work of animal welfare societies and their volunteers, he clings to the idea that many of the homeless animals they work with are simply someone's lost pets. Unfortunately, the reality is much grimmer. However, Mr. Levin does make a point of donating a portion of the book sale proceeds to shelters.

Pros: an honest 'everyman' portrayal

Cons: author seems a bit niave about plight of homeless pets
