Newton's "unofficial" dog park
posted 4 years ago
The newspaper says:
"For the past 25 years, the park has been an unofficial off-leash dog park and a sanctuary for canines to run and roll around in the spacious grassy area. It’s also been self-policed by a group of the park’s most frequent users who aren’t afraid to tell owners about keeping the place clean or to get a license for a dog."
And its true! Newton does not allow off-leash dogs, however many 'dog people' will tell you, this is the place to go. No authorities are there to fine you - it is common knowledge that its a 'dog park' despite political debates on what to do with it.
The people that frequent the park are generally good - most with good dogs who behave properly. Charlie had a blast last time we went, as there were probably about a 10-15 dogs running around.
The only complaint I have is perhaps due to winter.. but there was dog waste EVERYWHERE in the trails that lead up to the field. I mean, everywhere. I don't understand who all these people are that think "oh its the woods, the dog can just 'go' and I don't have to clean it up". Its a public trail system - really appalling that people just leave the waste there. Fortunately the actual field is very clean - can't hide your dog's activities there!
Pros: large clean area, good trails for walking, convenient
Cons: people don't pick up after their dogs on the trails!
