Island Strays - US territories

While there are so many problems in the Continental US with animal abuse, feral cats, need for spay and neuter, etc. it is not a surprise to hear about the ongoing problems in Puerto Rico and the USVI. But even though there are still many abuse cases in PR reported in the news, I was happy to see that things are changing in USVI. I just came back from vacation on St. John and have seen a great change on the island over the past few years in regard to animal treatment. When I began visiting the island about 15 years ago you always saw dogs and cats wandering the streets. They were "everyone's and no one's pets". But beginning about 2 years ago there have been shelters established, fundraising efforts and spay and neuter clinics set up. The USVI is a US territory and it is governed by the US government. All animal rights efforts have been volunteer and donation driven much like the efforts in the continental US. But all efforts start with small steps and awareness. I am glad that many of the programs that have been spreading in the US are now trickling down to our island territories.
