Volunteer program at Austin Humane Society
Green is the entry level, where no animal experience is necessary, and you can interact with the more easy-going dogs that don't need training to be calm and adoptable.
Blue is the next level up, where you learn training techniques from more experienced volunteers to teach the dogs sit, down, steady (heel), etc., to give the dogs a base of lifelong skills for new owners.
Yellow is the next level. As a yellow volunteer, you are taking on more responsibility to work with dogs that have behavioral issues. You are also able to offer adoption counseling to prospective owners, and take animals to off-site events to promote the shelter.
Orange is the highest level. The Orange volunteers are able to do the most rehabilitation of animals along with staff to make dogs adoptable that would have been euthanized in other shelter systems. They also run the volunteer programs with the guidance of our Volunteer Coordinator Sarah.
AHS is very proud of our Yellow & Orange volunteers, because they have proven that even in a shelter environment, dogs can be rehabilitated with dedication and care.
