The Makeover Contest "Grieving Process"

Well, yesterday around 11 AM I got the phone call that the shelter I support didn't make it into the top 3. Thank goodness, I had a busy day with quite a few social engagements, so I didn't really get time to be depressed! : )
I was in shock, really. I think we all were at first. My fellow volunteers and I decided to be positive and to try to make things happen on our own.... if not a new million dollar facility, at least fixing the holes in the ceilings! Shock is an early reaction in the "grieving process" that psychologists speak of.

And there's also other emotions, like despair and anger. As for the sadness, yes, there have been tears from many and over 16,000 supporters who are bummed out. Most of all, many of the people closest to the shelter are sad.

I have seen and heard many, many angry reactions and words. And I've read some of them on Zootoo. Please, do not condemn people who are venting their anger as "sore losers", etc. I think people are entitled to their feelings. And how could they not feel angry? Yes, people are very hurt, because we all had this dream that we'd win a new facility and all of our work would pay off. See, we didn't find out until January that being number one in points didn't mean we'd win the grand prize. But then we theorized that if we earned the most points, we would prove to Zootoo that we were deserving of the big investment and that we would be able to sustain and support it. (Not to mention the official promo package containing a script that said the shelter with the most points had the greatest chance of winning)

So, we did work really REALLY hard to get to and stay at #1. And by hard I mean volunteers standing in the snow and rain outside of Wal Marts and PetCos every weekend, flyering the whole county, and spending entire weekends at public events with wireless laptops.

We did think we would win.... and thus the angry comments from people. Anger is a common reaction to hurt, pain, and disappointment. That's the human condition, and the pain is valid. So, taking into account how much effort and emotion was behind our 2 million + points, you can perhaps understand why some people are reacting in less than attractive ways.

The possibility of a $1 million shelter is like dangling one giant, juicy carrot infront of over 900 starving horses. We, who are involved in shelters, know of the endless, tireless, thankless, stressful work we do. We know how hard people have to struggle to make even a tiny dent of good in the massive pet overpopulation and abuse problems. We see on a regular basis things like (and I'll use examples that I have seen in the past 6 months at my local shelter): a four month old puppy strangled by a rope and killed, a 9 month old boxer mix stabbed, a cat shot at close range by a rifle, 27 dogs who never saw the outside, covered in cuts, urine, feces, and emaciated, all rescued from one tiny house, and a lovely 13 year old mutt who died of old age at our shelter, never finding a home.

This contest gave me so much hope, and now it is temporarily crushed. We did, of course, benefit from the contest, but not in the way that I thought we would. And that's all it is.... disappointment. Yes, we'll all move on from the sadness of missing out on this once in a lifetime opportunity. And we will keep saving lives every day, for as long as shelters are needed.

I am happy for whatever shelter wins because, even though this was a competition and my heart and soul were put into it, I know that the dogs and cats at WAHS are no more important than dogs and cats at any shelter and that we are all in the business of saving lives! It makes me happy to know that at least one shelter in the world will be more comfortable for the animals and people there.

God bless all of us who stand up for, rescue, provide for, and love the vulnerable and voiceless companion animals..... animals that are often better friends to man than any fellow human is even capable of.

If anyone wants to try to help WAHS get a makeover "our way", please come to the Canonsburg Eagle's Lodge (122 North Central Ave) Tuesday 27 at 7 pm. Look at what we were able to do by getting to #1 on zootoo.... who would've thought our little shelter could do that? But we DID do it, and now we can try to raise money on our own to build a new shelter (or at least fix the holes in the ceilings?) . We all need to join together, put our heads together, and yes, we CAN do this if we all try!
Feel free to message me for more details

I ditto all you said. .. . I am sad too. I thought our shelter (voorhees animal orphanage) really had a shot.

I spent many many hours on zooToo working for my points for the shelter. I know a handful of other volunteers too who worked a lot more than I did and I know we were all "crushed" ....
the only saving grace is that SOME very worthy shelter will benefit from this makeover. I know they have wonderful adoptable dogs & cats too who will be able to enjoy the makeover.
God bless the orphans out there and all the volunteers who work so hard and care so much for the wonderful stray dogs and cats across america!
:o) judy

Though the adoption came at an albeit coincidental time (my other dog died in January), I adopted a wonderful, handsome and ridiculously cute little doggie as a friend for my other dog because of the ZooToo contest and because I wanted to make a difference. I, too, got some of my points deleted but I have reached a lot of people through the adoption of Brock, from the Animal Orphanage in Voorhees, NJ. We meet a lot of people with our dogs and everyone knew that we got new doggies (Calvin in December and Brock in April) and know exactly from where we got them. Two subsequent adoptions have taken place because I directed people to two different shelters in the area.

This contest made a difference in mine, my husband's and my dogs' lives and has done so for at least two other dogs' lives in my area. There is a saying "To the world you may just be One person, BUT to One person you may be the World!" I know that's not equivalent to a shelter makeover (and BELIEVE ME I am very depressed that our shelter didn't win) but the shelter staff and volunteers mean the world to my new family and me.

Thank you.

Absolutely enjoyed reading this entry and agreeing with everything that you said. I appreciate the fact that you took the time and worded it SO well.

Thank you for that great journal entry. We all are adjusting, all be it slowly. I too feel that one shelter helped, still helps The animals we all work to save.
Thanks again and good insight on being able to vent.

Reviews were removed for arbitrary and vindictive reasons. Many of us who were supporting Midwest Rabbit Rescue and Rehome lost thousands of points. I personally lost almost half my reviews and over 3000 points on one day, and that happened twice. Products that use every day like Oxbow pellets and hays got removed 5 or 6 times, sometimes the reviews would be removed a few hours after I wrote it. I had lots of photos of bunnies playing with cat toys removed too. We could not even write reviews about the shelter that we were supporting, those lasted a few hours at best.

I can totally empathize with the people feeling sad and frustrated about how this ended. The process kept changing, zootoo offered zero customer support and guidance and we all got frustrated at times. The best thing that could come out of this for me is that more people now know where their local shelter is and what the people there do for animals.

You summed it up for us so well, Lauren. Thank you.

Lauren, you have said it all. I hope I can get the attitude you have about the whole thing. It doesn't seem fair but we will move on. Our love of animals will win in the end. I doubt you will see me checking in on this sight many more times as it did not pay off in the first place. I hope you enjoy your vacation.

Well spoken, Lauren and Pat. I am disappointed but I volunteered yesterday for 8 hours and came to realize (again) why I do it. I drove 2 abandoned and pitiful animals to the animal hospital, walked dogs, did an offsite, and some computer work. I always come home feeling like a better person because in some small way I made their lives a little better. It put things back into perspective for me. We'll keep collecting donations, collecting raindrops in buckets, recycling cans, doing the grunt work, and anything else we can to save them.

I like your post.
All we do is beneficial to the animals.
Keep up the good work, girlfriend! the orphans are better off because of people like you!
kudos - judy from new jersey (voorhees animal orphanage)

Yes all have a right to feel disappointed and as time moves on I'm sure it will be looked at as another learning experience. Soliciting votes all came up with some great ideas and that came be turned around for soliciting donations. As I mentioned the shelder may not have gotten the "golden Ticket" but some shelter that is just as needy will and the animals there will benefit as we all benefit from the experience.
Who knows, here may be more shelter makeovers in the future

You expressed it very well. We (PWP) didn't enter the contest until February, and when I read the contest rules and I realized that the one with the most points wouldn't necessarily win, I was relieved because our tiny shelter would have a chance. We did have a chance... and we made it to the top 20... but didn't make the finalists. It breaks our hearts-- we thought for sure our shelter needed it the most-- and probably every single person out there thinks their shelter also needs it the most!
But now the real work begins. Utilizing the publicity. Bringing in community support. Fundraising, educating, making a difference in the animals' lives. They don't care whether they are in a million dollar shelter or a shack, they just want to have love and a real family. The shelter itself won't help animals, it's the people who work for the shelter. So let's roll up our sleeves and get busy! They are counting on you.

Amen. Great attitude, and you will prevail with it.

Please don't forget the people who may not have the time to volunteer due to their busy work/family life. They may only make a monetary donation or drop off supplies needed. But they still play a part in helping improve the lives of the animals at the shelters.

You are right. Right now there are fundraisers to plan and grants to write. Life goes on.

We all will work together and continue what we do best, caring for the animals. The contest helped us with PR and really had made a difference. And I really believe, more will come are way because of Zootoo.

i don't. i think everything will go back to the way it was...... struggle and sadness, with victories in between. The chance of a new facility was like a beacon of light in a sea of darkness and it's all over now. So, back to the grunt work. ANd no doubt, the public will lose interest again now that the media storm is over. How depressing. I am going on vacation this tomorrow and hope to gain some insight and a better outlook on this whole contest heartbreak.

Lauren, enjoy your vacation you earned it. We will get a million dollars and rebuild our shelter, count on it. I would never enter another contest ( I see I have had points subtracted, for what? ) it was too subjective and misleading, but he did have the right to pick who he wanted and we obviously didn't measure up and never will , so we need to get over it, realize that with the time and energy that we put into zootoo, we can expend that same energy and raise a million ourselves, no, not build a new shelter that is impossible financially and that land probably doesn't even have water on it. What is turning me off zootoo is what I am reading about people losing 7000 points, I just lost about 100 and I cannot imagine how or why. I won't play around with a website where people can subtract other people's points with no explanation. So get on with life andforget this contest, Faye said it well, we will do our own makeover and we learned a lot. Pat

Pat, I'm sorry you feel that you cannot 'measure up.' The opinion of ZooToo is nothing more than just THEIR opinion, and you should not let that define who you are as an organization and how you feel about yourself. Obviously, you think WAHS is #1-- SO IT IS!!! If it makes you feel any better, you can dismiss ZooToo's choice of Top 3 as wrong (in your opinion), and go on doing great work for your organization.

I just now saw your reply, no I don't feel that we dont "measure up" except in the eyes of zootoo. And that's OK. I think we are a great shelter that has overcome a lot of problems to get to where we are today. So don't worry, I am not losing self esteem over this. I just meant we didn't measure up in Zootto's eyes. Thanks for all your insightful comments.

Pat-
Because points were awarded in the course of a contest, reviews such as 'good stuff' or personal opinions about products / services that the user had obviously not used were not allowed as per the rules of the contest (and the site in general). Those points were removed, and it was done so in a completely unbiased way and definitely done objectively across the board to all shelters qualifying for top 20.

I do understand that, but I never wrote about anything I hadn't used or tried. I finally got out all the books I have on animals (and have read) and put them on the website, being careful not to do more than 5 in a day. I also replied to news articles a lot when I ran out of products and books but never replied in one or two words, I tried to come up with some opinion , a sentnece at least but more often a paragraph. I think that is the main problem that should be addressed here, this subtracting of points. Thanks for your help Pat

David, I respectfully disagree with you here. I had hundreds of good reviews removed for no reason. These were products or services that I either now use or had used in the past. These were not one line reviews - they stated that I used the product/service, frequently named my pets, and gave an honest opinion. Among others, I had my review of my vet, the shelter I volunteer at, and the shelter I was supporting in the contest removed. I am not exaggerating when I say that I had at least 25,000 points taken away from me during this contest. There were many others that I personally know of that had this very same thing happen to them. It was very demoralizing, but we did not quit. We persevered and came in #6. Our shelter was very grateful to be able to participate in this contest and come home with $6,000 we did not have before.

The flagging was so rampant at one point that I quit the contest for a few weeks. I just could not stand doing some reviews and posting some new pictures each evening, and then waking up in the morning to see that everything had been deleted. I even recruited some friends who have bunnies to come to zootoo, and they would register, write a couple of reviews, and within a day the reviews were gone.

Slavetoabunny managed to get me back into the fray and after Midwest Rabbit Rescue and Rehome fell to #21, we clawed our way back up to #6. This idea that "bad" reviews were removed because of poor content is just not the case. Reviews were removed because of flags from users, so in essence your competition can get your points removed. Very web 2.0 (user generated content, community moderation, etc.) but not a very good way to run a contest.

Don't worry about what he thinks, he's just saying stuff to protect his job. If we all leave their won't be much left here.... I think I agree with zootoo's inability to communicate effectively. They do stuff and never notify you as to why they've deleted something. Dogster.com doesn't seem to have any gimmicks and no carrots dangling to get people to use their site.
