The Erie County SPCA is an awesome place!

I have been a volunteer at the shelter since September 2001. I have seen the creation of innovative programs such as New Leash on Life. A dog that does not do well in a shelter environment is taken in by a foster family who works with the dog until she is ready to be adopted. This foster care system works very well for cats also. I hadn't thought about adopting an animal until a friend dared me to foster a kitten. I went to the SPCA on Thursday January 4, 2007 to volunteer in the Petique, the shelter shop that sells gifts and all the equipment you would need to start a life with a dog or a cat. I took a peek at the kittens and there was a small, gray 3 month-old kitten meowing at me. I was hooked the moment I saw her. I took her home a couple of days later, becoming a foster parent so I could socialize her . I named her Grace and she loves to lay on my bed with me. She is very affectionate, curious and energetic! At first, I was terrified of the thought of being responsible for this little kitten. The SPCA staff and my good friends Patti and Laura answered the many questions I had about raising Grace, so I decided to adopt her. Through my work in the Petique, I have learned so much about animal behavior and care. If the SPCA were to win the shelter makeover, we could create isolation rooms for sick animals, expand the store and help even more animals than we do now. We have such solid community support that we have been able to maintain financial viability since 1867. We are the second oldest shelter in the USA and with Zootoo's assistance, we will be able to carry on our mission for the next 141 years!
