That's just Buffalo

If you stand in a doorway and look up at the jam you will get a idea of how deep the blowing lake snow can get in a matter of days. Count to 100 and you will know how long it takes for our neighbors to rally and start helping each other.
That's just Buffalo.
We are Pay Check Americans. We are Foot Ball fans and Hockey lovers. Our lake runs fresh and deep to cool our summer and freeze into the spring. Our sponges are candy and our spicy wings have flown around the world. History's roots are so deep here. We have welcomed the the first boats on the Erie canal and walked under the novel glow of electric lights. We have watched the birth of a nation and buried its Presidents.
We are all the colors of the tumbling fall leaves and more. We are a global quilt of cultures. Native, Polish, Irish, Italian and so many others are all woven into communities that grow and change into time. Small Businesses, schools, libraries, Houses of Worship and community groups fill our streets and anchor us against the lake's winter winds.
The Erie County SPCA is one of those anchors. When the tides of time began to change and the country started to remember the need for kindness, they opened their doors to help the animals who were forgotten. Though the generations of budget crunches, global wars and energy crisis those doors have remained open. We have come to them to find help. We walked through them to find a lost pet or adopt a new one. We have proudly watched them swing into action to support other parts of the country during their times of crisis. Many of us will be at those doors on April 16th. Many others will be there only in spirit.
We are an area that has struggled against the economic tides. We would love to take a day off, fill the car with $4 a gallon gas and go to a rally, but too many of us are just treading water at break even broke. We can't always give the time or the monetary support that organizations like this need on a daily bases to stay afloat. We have to count 100 and hope that enough of our neighbors will be able to get there to help show who we are and how much the Erie County SPCA does for us.. We know that they will because....
That's just Buffalo.

I like the way you began and ended this the same way. Your journal gave me a really good idea of your area and of your pride in your area. I liked reading it very much.

You asked me what my idea of Buffalo was after reading this. I pictured a melting pot of "salt-of-the-earth" families who have a lot of pride in their area and each other.

Am I right? ;-)
