Shelter Makeover

I would love for our shelter to win the million dollar
makeover because they are so deserving just by the example
they set for our entire community every single day.
Faced with so many challenges and yet they know that lives depend on them for food, shelter and even love. They have the strength, but most important of all the faith that
they can make a difference in each animal's life and find them a home. Our animals deserve a better environment to
spend their days while waiting for their forever home.
The shelter takes in 5000 animals a year. The space is so small that cats and dogs are housed in the same room which is not a calming environment for the cats. There is
no seperate space to quarantine an animal if he becomes sick
so it can pass from animal to animal which makes a sick
animal harder to adopt. The shelter staff do a wonderful job
in keeping the areas clean. There is never an odor when you
walk in, but only smells clean. The building is old and
situated in an area that is hard to reach unless you are familiar with the area. The roof leaks and needs replaced.
Yet, as I said with each of these challenges , the shelter
is a loving, caring place for these animals.
We need a low cost spay/neuter clinic to reduce the
number of dogs and cats that come into the shelter. Our small
community has lost so many industrial jobs in the last few
years that many people do not have the extra money to spend on having their animals spayed or neurtered . The word
needs to reach them that spaying and neutering is healthier
for the animals and become better educated about this problem. If we had a low cost clinic it would greatly
help with the number of dogs and cats that come into the
shelter every year.We need to break the cycle in this
community of unwanted animals .
A small little town in West Virginia worked tirelessly together to place our shelter in the Top 20 out of the
entire country because we felt our animals deserve a better home .We followed the example of the workers and volunteers at the shelter to have the strength and keep the faith that
with a little effort we could might be able to make a
difference in the life of an animal.
Our shelter is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. What a wonderful birthday present for them to win the
million dollar makeover.
