Please take the time to read this!!!

Dear Reader,

=^..^=
One of our beloved animal rescue shelters (The Little Shelter) is a toe in for winning a million dollar makeover! All we have to do is write a short essay, doesn't have to be a lot, just a FEW words to explain why we think they should win! Community involvement -- YOU -- is considered by the ZooToo.com judges. The judging is almost finished; please, PLEASE write TODAY.

Over the years they have taken in cats, dogs, and other little creatures to safety. They have nurtured, fed, and cleaned them; and given them their unconditional love! These people live in our community and are just like us: doing what they have to do to get by. What separates them is the time that they take out of their life for the care of homeless animals in our area.

All we have to do is help support them!! So let’s work together and help them win this makeover. Please write a few words to show you care as much as they do for all the little animals that still have yet to find a loving home!

Thank you all for taking the time out to support such a great place that needs the love returned to them! >^..^<

Funny, you took the time to write that to me! Are you an animal lover? It seems doubtful, you can keep your comments to yourself next time! I don't need them.

Thanks

Instead of engaging in a "personal attack" by questioning whether I am an animal lover and telling me to keep my comments to myself, it would be more appropriate and constructive if you (and others) addressed the issues I've raised and stated what statements you disagree with and why. My comment pertains to all top twenty shelters (although it happens to fall under your entry).

Michele, the fact that you have adopted 6 shelter cat 'throwaways' is proof in itself that you ARE an animal lover! And as ZooToo is a forum for the expression of one's opinions, I am open to reading all comments as long as they are not hateful or harmful. The original press release from ZooToo stated that Richard and an advisory board will choose the shelter that it deems as most deserving for the million dollar makeover. In no part of this press release did it ever mention that the most needy shelter will automatically receive the makeover. Of course, 'deserving' or meritorious is a very subjective term. It is now obvious that ZooToo takes many things into consideration in making its final decision. Merit is measured in the form of present performance, effort, community involvement, etc. You're absolutely right, some comments and journal entries can seem very biased to an outsider. However, we need to have faith in ZooToo that they will read all comments with a compassionate yet rational and discerning mind, and that their final decision will be one that is well thought out and thoroughly vetted without becoming completely disconnected with human emotion. After all, it is our human compassion that drives many of us to help homeless animals.

Thanks, Hymcheng, for your rational, meaningful, and intelligent response! You always make good points and they give me information to think about--such as the difference between "neediest" and "most deserving". However, the makeover contest was supposed to have ended on March 31st and, as far as I know, it was not officially extended--yet "Jillian724" pointed out that the judges have requested an essay. This appears to be an extension to the contest that apparently was not officially announced, and I'm questioning its validity. Your explanation is plausible, but I'm not sure it fits the "official rules". Will the "most deserving" shelter be the one that submits the "best essay"? If not, then the essay is neither necessary nor appropriate given the existing contest rules. I see your point about merit, but I would assert that any such merit should have been demonstrated by the contest deadline--March 31, 2008.

Well, I took the "time to read this" but you may not like my reaction. I don't think any of the top 20 shelters should be required to write an essay on why "they think they should win". It is my understanding that the (up to) $1 million makeover winner was to be selected by the judges on the basis of being deemed the NEEDIEST, assessed through the "makeover tour". There has already been confusion over which shelter will win (e.g., the one with the most points; the "neediest"; the one that has the most "community support", etc.) Adding an essay at this point suggests that the Zootoo Judges have at least partly failed to ascertain the neediest shelter on their own via the tour. Moreover, essays pertaining to "why a shelter should win" are bound to be subjective, emotional, pleading, etc. (i.e., contrary to Zootoo's self-proclaimed image)--and less likely to be objective and nonbiased. In my opinion, Zootoo ought to recall their request for an essay and disregard the pleas contained in these journals; Zootoo judges need and are obligated to declare the winner ("neediest" shelter) based on their tour and OBJECTIVE assessment. Let us see IF the "nonbiased site" can act in a nonbiased manner.
