The Dubuque Humane Society has taken in more than we have ever taken in in the past. We have had record breaking numbers this year and with the growing numbers year after year.. who's to say that we will have enough room next year if we don't build a bigger shelter? We are out of room. We can only house a certain number of dogs/cats at one time. and we constantly have incoming animals everyday! We pair dogs that do not come in together, which in reality is a gamble. they may pass the food aggression part of the eval.. but that is only towards people. You would not believe how many fights I have broken up over food. It is hard to know whether or not dogs that come from two different areas will get along.
Because the DHS takes animals from all over the tri-state area, we need a bigger facility. I know that I have said this many times but think about it.. a bigger shelter would increase adoptions rates and better yet cut down on euthansia rates. The more animals that we have the bigger the threat for sickness to spread through the shelter.
