John, Paula, and Kim, the Henderson Heroes 4/30/08 Visit # 17

It all starts with people like John, Paula, and Kim… but it continues with volunteers and supporters like those from Henderson, Kentucky. The Henderson Humane Society has done a complete turnaround from the challenging conditions the shelter was once in all because of these dedicated individuals.
The Zootoo Crew was picked up from their hotel by Paula and Kim, who were anxious to get the day underway! We were soon greeted by local animal control units who share the shelter with HHS- working side-by-side. There were also plenty of supporters on hand; including a bus full of high school seniors and a local radio DJ playing music. Everyone was ready to celebrate! What a great reception.
I met one very special supporter who told me an amazing story. Her name is Deanna and OMG, she wowed me! She does anything needed to work with the media, including crawling up the stairs in front of a radio station because they didn’t have a handicap access for her wheel chair and she wanted to get the shelter attention. That’s the “never give up” attitude I love to see!
Our partners, The Humane Society of the United States, also had Kentucky State Director, Pam Rogers on-site. She was already a supporter of the shelter and knew a few folks already. She helped us look at policy and procedures that were in place at HHS.
The shelter was on a small plot of land and sadly had no outside dog areas. They were obviously in need of a makeover, as are all the shelters we have seen so far. Picking the most deserving shelter will NOT be an easy task. But, this tour is accomplishing what I have been looking for in bringing communities and shelters together for the greater good… the animals.
And as always, there was a big Zootoo cake. And as always, our crew ate it up! I gotta say, Henderson had something no other shelter has…mouth watering, peanut butter pie! DELISH!
Off to Bowling Green... only 3 shelters left to tour.

Having all of you guys at our shelter was so surreal!! The opportunity zootoo is giving to shelters across the country is amazing. Watching our video, and the videos of the other shelters is very emotional for me. I know what each of these volunteers, staff and supporters go through. I think we can all relate on how much of a struggle it is....and also on how rewarding helping those that cant help themselves is. Helping the Henderson County Humane Society has become my life. I love those animals very very much and I try and do whatever I can to help them. There are many many things we need for our shelter....An outdoor area for the dogs, a bigger cat room for the cats, beds for all of the animals, nicer dog runs, a better sick room, a room for small dogs/puppies, a meet/greet room and some actual land to do all of this on! These are all dreams that I want to become realities for Henderson! All we want for our animals is the absolute best!! We just need some help to get there. Thank you so much for all that you are doing. I wish more people would step up and do the wonderful things that you are doing for animal shelters and rescues. -Kaleigh Duncan, Henderson Humane Society Volunteer

I'm so very excited! Sadly I was in school otherwise I would have been there! Thank you so much for giving our community a wake up call! It seems before now the only news we got was coverage a few years back when the shelter was in horrible condition. Thank you so much for showing our community that we DO have a shelter and we have a GREAT one at that!

It sounds like you guys have come along way and you had a nice Zootoo Day.

I would love to hear more about the "dog's night out". That was mentioned on the video.

Great job guys.

I too was intrigued by the 'night out' event. Sounds like a great way to get folks involved and dog's out and socialized. Would love to learn more.
