How open minded and progressive is the SPCA in Tonawanda, NY? I was the manager of a pet store, who made a huge sale every time an SPCA Adoptee walked in my store with their new family. I started volunteering with Gina Browning, the SPCA PR Director. One day I said "Too bad you don't have a store - I would love to work at the SPCA, but all I know is Retail." She said "Let's go talk to Barbara Carr," the Erie County SPCA's relatively new Director. Barbara said "Write a proposal for the Board," so I did. The Board ok'd hiring me, and sent me on a Buying Trip. That was fourteen years ago. I was the sole "Petique" employee, with one volunteer to cover my day off. I now have a part time staff assistant, Laura, and 26 volunteers. Barbara is amazing, our Board is wonderful, our volunteers and supporters are indispensible. The SPCA's staff has doubled in size in the past 14 years, and we institute innovative new programs on a whirlwind basis. But the building stays the same size, and it's 46 years are starting to show....
