I love Mondays!

I used to hate Mondays. The first day of the work week, five whole days before the weekend rolls around... but now that I volunteer at Stray Rescue on Mondays, all of that has changed. I look forward to Mondays when I get to check up on all of my four-legged friends. I bring them toys and treats and take them for long walks through Lafayette Park while I tell them all about my week.
I'm new to the organization, and I have to admit that I was afraid to volunteer because I thought I'd get my heart broken. I thought it would be really sad to see all of those dogs without homes and families who love them... but after just a few Monday shifts at the 18th St. Shelter, I'm amazed at the sense of fulfillment I get from spending a few hours a week with those animals. They've been through so much - they've been abandoned and mistreated, and yet they're so trusting and loving. The toughest looking dogs often are the most kind and gentle. And the volunteers really put their heart into making sure that they're treated well during their stay at Stray Rescue.
I've been involved with other humane societies in several different cities, and the difference between those and Stray Rescue is that I really feel like I'm making a difference. I spend a few hours a week making sure that the dogs are exercised and fed, and the puppies are socialized (it doesn't get much better than that!!!), and I'm constantly humbled by the knowledge that I'm just a tiny part of a huge group effort that's really making an impact.
Randy Grim is my hero! He started all of this, and he's managed to create an organization that is truly humane, and he's inspired people to get involved.
One person can make a difference.
One person can change the world.
Randy Grim has done that.
Thank You, Randy. St. Louis is very lucky to have you!
