This is one of the few shelters we’ve been to that is primarily managed by men and it’s great to see men with a passion to help pets because the norm is that it is mostly women that run the shelter. So congratulations country boys! Like a lot of shelter, this one is in desperate need of almost everything. Definitely needs a sign off the highway so you are able to find the place. I’m asking all the city and county officials to be helpful on making this signage happen on behalf of the shelter and the good works they are doing. We were fortunate to meet Doris, the original founder of the shelter. I’m certainly not going to question her love for animals and generosity in helping her community. With her donation, the shelter was able to add a second building to house more dogs. We are always happy to see the rural communities pull together to work on animal control and to find humane solutions for their communities. There is still a lot of work to be done in Cherokee County but it looks like they are off to a good start. So keep pulling together and good things are bound to happen.

BTW, as Mr. Thompson noted, our Doris and the Potsdam mayor are a lot alike. :)

The Tahlequah city shelter, a.k.a pound, has humane euthanasia. The Humane Society shelter is no-kill except, very rarely, when a veterinarian and at least two board members agree that there would be no quality of life.
It's another story for the general, largely rural, public, whom we work hard to help and educate.
