Erie County SPCA supports Veterinary Students

I am a fourth year veterinary student at Cornell University and I am doing an externship at the Erie County SPCA. Dr. Chevalier and Dr. Moran are so awesome and are helping me to learn more about veterinary medicine and allow me to practice my skills with them in the shelter. I think there is a lot of potential to teach students while still performing the funtions the shelter needs to accomplish on a day to day basis. Both the students and the shelter benefit from this sort of experience, it is great! I would love to see the shelter get a makeover to increase the size of the infirmary and surgery suite to allow them to have more time and room so more students can come and learn. The technicians are also wonderful and do a wonderful job assisting the veterinarian and providing good nursing care to the sick animals. I helped Dr. Chevalier with a third eyelid prolapse (cherry eye) this morning, and we really struggled to do the procedure with the equipment we had, and could have gotten it done much faster with some new surgery materials. Likewise, the radiology equipment could REALLY use an upgrade. Even so, I have been really impressed with everything the shelter has to offer the animals and the community.
