Cheryl and the Sheriff 4/23/2008 Visit # 12

Cheryl is one of the reasons I am here, doing this contest, and bringing community and shelters together to get more pets adopted. She is the shelter manager and strength of the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley in Marietta, Ohio. The day started out with Cheryl meeting us at our hotel (the luxurious Hampton Inn) with Mayor Michael Mullen and the police chief to escort the Zootoo Crew… I drove with the chief, in the front seat, not the back! And the chief let me hit the siren button a few time as we pulled up to the shelter.
The driveway to the shelter was filled with what looked like… and sounded like 100’s of kids and their parents from Putnum Grade School; all holding individually made Zootoo signs. The Zootoo Crew was blown away! There was so much community support from locals to Representatives from the County Commissioners, the Interim President, 9 members from the Board of Directors, the media, and the generous Cobb family, which owns the Toyota dealership, donated HSOV $5,000.00 on the spot and loaned the shelter a van to haul us around.
I continue to hammer on urging all shelters to be sure all pets are spay and neutered before leaving the shelter. Although HSOV doesn’t have a spay and neuter facility, Cheryl says they are trying to get more vets involved with low cost and no cost procedures for their pets.
One special presentation was the police force showed us the skills of a trained police dog. It was really amazing to see these shelter dogs trained to do police work. I love that the shelter and sheriff’s office work so closely to help each other out.
That was not the only special surprise… in my hotel room was a kitty litter cake! (Wait to see the video!) It was a cake in a real litter box with real looking cat…….those heated up and twisted tootsie rolls simply looked too real. Our partner PEDIGREE Adoption Foundation representative John Anton and I took the first bites. And yes, we are still living to tell the story. Thank you, Janie the cat litter cake maker, for such an unusual and delicious treat. The whole Zootoo Crew loved the midnight snack!

I am so happy that Marietta's shelter is receiving the much needed attention it deserves! I cross my fingers and say a prayer each night that you win the million dollar makeover. I even prayed to the Pope when he was here!
Every animal deserves a warm and loving home but we all know that is not the case. The ZOOTOO website and shelter makeover contest has definetly helped open my eyes to the thousands of issues that impact animals everyday in the world around us.
I have two wonderful dogs that I love dearly and take loving care of but I guess I just never got more involved in the lives of other animals. ZOOTOO has made me think about and question how I can make a difference in the lives of animals.
I live in Waterloo Iowa and our town is trying to get a dog park put together. Now that I have seen what people can do when they set their minds to it I am going to see what I can do to make this happen.
I am inspired and proud of what all the shelters have accomplished!
Before ending, I would like to mention a very special person in my family. Her name is Debbie Kelley of Marietta Ohio and she is the most passionate and loving animal advocate that I know. Debbie does not drive a fancy car (though she once did), or live in a grand house (though she once did), or have a six figure income (though she once did).........
What Debbie DOES have is twelve beautiful cats (she lost one during the ZOOTOO contest) and I think nine feral cats that she takes care of everyday behind th Dairey Queen in town.
She'll probably be mad at me for writing this journal but I just wanted her to know that I am very proud of what she has accomplished in her life.
Debbie has few material possessions now, but what she does have she shares with her family of cats (or kids as she calls them). She goes without so that her cats are fed and taken care of. Most of these cats were abandoned or left at her house.
Months ago Debbie heard an ad on the radio for ZOOTOO.s Shelter Makeover and said we can do this! And you did, all of you!
Debbie, you are a wonderful friend to animals and I know that your only regret in life is that you can't save every animal and give them a good home.
Debbie & I will be there for the ZOOTOO announcement on May 15th. I could not let her miss this once in a lifetime event.
Please, if there is god (and has four legs) let Marietta's shelter win the makeover!
Thanks for listening,
Pam Bolick
