Indiana Shelter To Stop Picking Up Strays

The Humane Society of Indianapolis says a
budget deficit is forcing it to stop accepting stray animals and to
change its procedure for taking in unwanted pets.
Chief executive Martha Boden says the policy changes should cut
$800,000 from its operating budget and wipe out the deficit next
year.
Under new procedures for giving up pets, a Humane Society
staffer might suggest tips or training classes to improve behavior.
The owner will have to make an appointment for the drop-off and
provide a life history of the pet.
The changes take effect March 15th.
City public safety director Scott Newman says he expects the
changes will send more animals to the Marion County pound.

Of course it will result in more animals going to the pound. Hopefully the HSOI will pull animals from the pound to make up the difference. This is not unusual with large no-kill shleters...they close their doors when full and turn animals away that they don't think they can place. These end up going to open admission shelters who must euthanize.
