Horse Racing Just another commodity

I don't watch horse races ( I do think they are amazing creatures and enjoy seeing them run on their own delighting and kicking up their hooves) but after hearing about the Kentucky Derby and the putting down of Eight Belle. (Reactions poor us who had to witness not poor horse made to do this)
Why is it necessary to beat and whip a horse into performing till death. Most would consider this cruelty.
Just because there is a long tradition doesn't mean it should still be done. I wonder what the statistics are for horse injuries/deaths due to racing. We think we are civilized in gloves and hats , coats and ties at these events, perhaps not!
