Last Sunday, April 26, I got a call from a fellow Humane Society member about an injured cat. A young man had come after being gone for several days and noticed his neighbor's cat lying the yard--not moving. He went to check on it and discovered it was still alive but barely. Owners said cat had been hit by a car. He called his girlfriend's mother and a HSCC member forwarded the call to me. I asked if they could get the cat and bring it to me. We met and I picked up the cat. His hind legs were rigid, he was covered with maggots--some of which were huge--some of his skin was mummified and he smelled of decomposition. He had obviously lain there for many days. Horrifyingly, he was conscious and responded to my voice and to being petted. We made arrangements to get him to a vet, but he died before we got there. I believe that a vet would probably have recommended putting him down. The cat was a little boy's pet and he cried when they took the cat. What kind of people let an animal lie there and be eaten alive and let their child watch it?
I literally become nauseated when I remember that cat.
Can't the HSCC have more enforcement power or can't the police pursue these things more vigorously?
