Very Sad Day.....

My little Harley D passed away today. I had him at the vets on Saturday, I wanted to wait on his shots because he was so skinny. I was worried about worms, so I took a stool sample to get it checked. ( I was/am worried about my Zeus, because I caught him sampling the litterbox on Friday!)
Well according to the tech at the vets, his sample was negative...I asked if they were sure because I was concerned about his weight. She again said it was negative. So I figured he must just be a really laid back kitten.
Well, today John called me at work and said he had some bad news...He came home from work and went to let Harley D out (I was keeping him in our bathroom while we were at work), and that is when he found him. He was pretty freaked out because he had long white worms sticking out of his little mouth, rectum & even his nose! What a horrible way to die.....I feel so bad...I know he had to suffer, and I wasn't there!
What I am also furious at the tech who checked his stool sample! How on earth she could have missed a sample LOADED with worm eggs.....I'm not mad at the vet, he doesn't check samples...BUT HIS TECHS.....Now THAT is another story! I am taking his body out there tomorrow, before I bury him and ask them HOW he could test negative when he has worms crawling out of everywhere!!!!! I am so upset right now.....This will haunt me forever! I know how much poor Harley must have been suffering! I feel sorry for the tech who checked his sample!!!!!!
The only thing that makes me feel okay is knowing he wasn't hit by a car or attacked by one of the raccoons, or put down at the shelter....But I still feel like it's my fault he's gone. I should have asked them to check the sample again!
Rest in Peace Harley D.....you are going to be missed dearly....Not only from me and John, but by Zeus also..........

I am so sorry for your loss. Harley D was such a cut little guy who's life ended way too early. I too lost a kitten around the same age and it makes it harder to lose one so young. I've heard that parasites don't always show up in stool samples depending on their cycle but in poor Harley D's case how could they not! I would most certainly speak with whomever is in charge at that vet's office! Obviously the staff needs to be better monitored and credentials should most certainly be checked. There's a way you can check on human doctor's to see if they have any complaints against them. I wonder if there is a similar body for vets. If so, I would consider contacting them to place a complaint so other's can be warned! I am again very sorry for your loss.

That's horrible! You did everything you could do-you're not at fault the tech is! I'm so sorry for you lose.

I am so so sorry for your loss. I almost cried when I read your journal entry! Losing a pet is very hard, but do not think it is your fault! You did take him to the vet, you did get him tested. Its not as if you denied him veterinary care. It just so happens that the vet tech messed up.... badly. I would check with your state and see how you can hold that person/practice responsible for misdiagnosis! You might just want to bring a picture of the cats body over there, rather than bring him... it might end up being too much for you to bare. Also, you should get your other cat checked and dewormed just in case! I'm truly sorry for your loss. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!

I am so sorry for the loss of Harley D.

For a cat to be that far along with a parasite infestation, there had to be more graphic symptoms than you would need a stool sample to detect. I would check your local vet out with the state authorities who register and license them. I have posted before about going to a fake vet with a very convincing office, paperwork and manner, and then finding out from the newspapers that he was arrested for operating in various towns without a vet's training or licensing. I always check with the state, and I go so far as to try to match the age with claimed dates of graduation, etc. There are many human doctors who operate now without good licenses, so you know there have to be at least as many vets who do. Sorry about your kittie.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

That had to be devastating. How could they have missed that? It is not your fault, you did the right thing by taking Harley D. to the vet. I am so sorry.

I am SO VERY SORRY that this happened and for your loss.

Wendy, I'm so sorry for your loss of Harley D. We always feel guilty when something happens to our companions when we are not there. I hope you get satisfaction from your visit to the Vet, although it will not replace Harley D.
