Unbelievable... May you RIP kitty

I am so upset right now! About an hour ago we saw a big cat,(who we've seen before and believe may be a neighborhood cat) cross the road into our driveway, then get startled, run back into the road and get hit by a police patrol car! The officer knows that he hit something; he hit his brakes, but didn't even stop or come back to see if the animal (or whatever was just hit)! The cat didn't make it and is laying on the side off the road, near our driveway.

Glenn called animal control, but they aren't open until Tuesday. Then I asked Glenn to call the non-emergency line to let them know the cat didn't make it and was on the side of the road. I thought since it was their officer, they'd come pick up the cat and take care of it, rather than letting it lay there. Well, we were informed by the dispatcher that she would refer it onto animal control next week.

The reason I am the most upset is because this was an officer that hit the cat, but didn't even bother to stop! He has no idea if the cat is hurt and suffering, is dead, if there is a collar or if it was even an animal he hit! I completely understand it isn't the fault of the officer but I feel strongly that he should have at least stopped. And, it appalls me that this poor cat will lay out off the road for at least two days, probably a lot longer.

I'm thinking about seeing if I can wrap the cat up and take it down to BHS. We live in Paradise so it's totally out of Chico city limits but the thought of it just laying there kills me! Sorry for my venting post, I just had to share with people that understand...

Megan I am so sorry. I can just imagine what you are going through and so glad you can take down it to the shelter. If I can help in anyway let me know and I will be there Monday. It's alright to be angry, I am also.

I guess I'm more angry at the people who let their cat roam about. These days its just too dangerous. Poor little thing, thanks for showing her some care & respect in her untimely death.

The officer may have been responding to a call and had to make a judgement call. He may have known that the cat was beyond help but that he could still help the people who had called for the police. The officer may return and/or contact the owners of the cat in the next couple of days. If there is no attempt to follow up then I would withdraw any "benefit of the doubt"

This thought crossed our mind, but we actually live not too far from the police station and the officer was headed back after going by a few minutes before. And, based on our emergency scanner, there weren't any offices on any calls at the time. Although he had no lights or sirens on, he was driving fast, but most poeple do through here.

The thing that really bothers me is that the officer did not know what he hit. He knew he hit something because he hit his brakes after hitting her, but then continued on. My husband saw and even he said he heard the impact and he was in the house. The officer couldn't have seen what he hit because it was thrown off the road into the ditch. This was a poor cat that made a wrong move, but God forbid, what if it had been a child? I so hope I'm wrong, but I'd be shocked if we ever saw that officer come back and try to bring closure. Sorry ahead of time, I really don't mean to be so negative or such a nay-sayer. I still need a little time to not be so angry at the officer.

Megan, you are so right! That officer should have stopped, no doubt about it! I would write a letter to the police department and if you don't get any satisfaction from there, one to the mayor. This is an appalling act for any officer of the law. BHS is so wonderful for taking that precious little one in so she won't have to lie there all alone. RIP little kitty!

The BHS shelter manager is an angel! She just let me know that I could bring the kitty into the shelter and they'd take care of her so she doesn't have to lie out there by herself for days. Even though it doesn't take away my hurt for the cat or my anger at the officer, I feel better knowing after her untimely end the BHS folks helped her.

That should provide you with some peace.

I think this was very cruel and inhumane behavior especially come from an emergency worker. If I had hit the cat not only would I stop to see if there was something I could do to help, if I knew the animal had died I would have tried to find and call the owners. Because if it were my cat that was missing the not knowing would kill me, not to mention as hard as it might be I would want some closure.

Please " vent away ". I don't blame you. I am so very sorry that it happened. That officer is just cold blooded. In a previous journal I had mentioned that more psychological testing needs to be done. SOME police officers think that they're above the law. This was cruel.
