R.I.P. Cigar

April 6, 2007-January 13, 2009.

He had been having trouble breathing for a few days, but I just thought it was a bad cold or something, so a vet appointment was made for the 14th and I figured everything would be alright.

On the 13th he came inside and was panting heavily and acting even more listless than he had been the past couple days. I called the vet and they said he should come in right away.

The minute the vet saw him, he went from just a fairly normal visit to an emergency situation. They tried to treat him as if he was having an asthma attack, and put him on some oxygen. It helped for awhile but just awhile. The vet checked him over more and determine that his lungs were filling with fluid and that he had FIP. There was nothing to do for him other than keep him from having to be in the pain he was in, so I decided - after speaking with the vet - that we'd put him to sleep.

It's been a few days now, and I still haven't gotten used to him not being in the house. Every time I put out treats for the rest of the cats I expect him to come running in and try to eat everything like he always did.

It's just so hard to deal with because it happened so quickly. I was only at the vet's office for half an hour before he was put to sleep. Also, he was my best friend I guess you could say. I mean, I love all the other cats in the house, but he was my favourite by far. It just feels like the house is empty now.

FIP isn't an extremely common infection that cat's get, so none of the cats were vaccinated against it. We now have vaccinated all the cats in the house so hopefully nothing like this will happen again in the near future.

Well...at least he's not in pain anymore. I don't think I'll be okay with this any time soon, but hopefully it'll get better eventually. I just have to remember that he lived a very very happy life and remember all the great things about him. Ima miss his silly smile and him hanging his feet over everything when he sat down.
