Never Forget - WE ARE AMERICANS!

There has been much discussion about the economy, people losing their jobs and their homes - it is, no doubt, a very trying time - if one is not faced with one of these issues their life is surely touched by someone close to them going through a difficult time.

However, our GREAT Country was built out of difficult times. From breaking away from British rules & laws, through the Civil War, WWI, WWII and every war since and in recent times.

We have endured the Great Depression. Through out our history there have been times to feast and times of famines. Remember the Great Dust Bowl? Polio out break?

Yes, we are facing one of the worse economic crisis in our lifetimes. But not the worse through out history...

However, what makes our country so GREAT - is that we have that old Yankee 'can do' spirit! WE do NOT just surrender! We do NOT just succumb! WE ban together - we pool our resources. WE reach out and help each other.

Anyone remember (learning about) the sacrifices made that helped us win WWII? Women gave up nylon stockings to make parachutes. Pots & Pans from kitchens were melted down to make rivets for air planes. Communities got together and grew Victory Gardens.

Through out our history the citizens of our Great Country have been faced with making sacrifices. However, the greatest sacrifices made were from those that actually fought and died to keep our country FREE!

"The greatest gift one gives is to lay down one's life for the sake of another."

It is Memorial Weekend - I'd like to urge everyone to celebrate our GREAT Country! To remember those that have fallen through out the years - those that have died, of yester years and even as I write this - so that we can maintain our Country and all it stands for.

This may seem difficult with all that is going on all around us - however, we owe it to our GREAT Country to NEVER forget!

The economic pain of today will pass. It has before, it will again - the pendulum of life swings back and forth. WE will pull through this very small patch of time - WE will preserver!

WE ARE AMERICANS! That is what we do! We pull ourselves up by our boot-straps - we do what we have to do - we make sacrifices - many die - and in the end, we are what makes this country so GREAT - WE ARE AMERICA!

Please, fly your flag - do not live in doubt and fear - WE - TOGETHER - are a GREAT NATION of PEOPLE!

I pray we never forget what makes being an AMERICAN so GREAT! I pray for those that gave their lives for us to be able to write on Zootoo...

Have a memorable Memorial Day Weekend! My the spirit of what makes OUR country so GREAT live on in each and every one of US.

Thank you for your very appropriate and timely comments concerning America and it's people and how we survived all that has happened in this country. I agree with you completely. We as an American people have gone through worst times and not only survived...but actually thrived. Unfortunately, some of our most dedicated and brightest unselfishly paid with their lives so that the rest of us could carry on and rebuild, keeping the American spirit alive. We can never repay and should never forget these unique individuals who fought not only for us personally, but for the rights of all people to be free. These are the reasons that people worldwide have one thing in common.....they all want to come to America! Even those in foreign countries who claim to hate us, want to come to America. Why? It is because only in America can they experience the freedoms granted to all humans by the creator. This holds true even if these individuals do not know the creator exists. As you mentioned several times, American's are SURVIVORS. Some may ask, how did they do it? Throughout the entire history of the United States, the deck has been stacked against us, but still we remain.....why?? The answer is determination and perseverance. It is the People of the United States who give it the strength to survive....and it will be the People of the United States who ensure that this country continues to do so. For those who perished, protecting our freedoms, we as survivors owe it to them to stay strong and continue where they left off....ensuring that this country, the United States, remains a free nation....free from TYRANNY and INJUSTICE....and be willing to fight...."enemies both foreign and domestic". Those who would reduce this country to something similiar to what you might find in a foreign country. That IS NOT what our patriots died for! We must always remember that! So....as you mentioned, EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US...as AMERICANS, need to take up our challenges, remind others, help our neighbors and communities to survive difficult times. As Robert Schuller once said "tough times never last, but tough people do!". American's are those "tough people"! So on Memorial Day, in respect, rememberance and gratitude to those who we celebrate, "the toughest of the tough" the most important thing we can do as Americans is to BE INFORMED and ALERT to current issues both locally and nationally.....and on election day....know the issues and VOTE! Those who perished protecting our country did their part, we owe it to them to do ours! Always remember....the People decide what happens in the United States....because the People ARE the United States. Hope all of you have a safe and thoughtful Memorial Day!

Kevin, thank you for your passion - your words are very touching. You are so correct, "the People ARE the United States." ONLY WE, the people have the ability to change the things we do not like. WE are lucky to have the privilege to have our voices heard. WE have the right to VOTE, to challenge our politicians to represent everyone's best interest - WE need to continue to work together, through thick and thin, this is THE GREATEST COUNTRY on planet earth! Thank you - hope everyone proudly flew their AMERICAN FLAG!

I hope that many will read your very appropriate journal and it will "fire them up" a little. Too many people in this country suffer from indifference. They feel they can't make a difference....but the truth is...every vote makes a difference! As American's, we all owe it to those who fought and died to stay informed and take interest in what happens in our country. If we don't like what we see....we need to take action. Voting is only a part of it...although an important part of course. BTW....it rained here a lot today....so unfortunately, it was necessary, out of respect ...to not fly our nation's flag in inclement weather. I felt badly about it.....but that is the rule!

Kevin, it has been raining here a lot - so I understand not flying the flag. You are so correct - if we as American's do NOT like something we have the opportunity to take action! Not just sit back and complain - but to do something to change/fix what we do not like. People in American have become very apathetic and just settling in the past several years - perhaps afraid to speak out. As a result, we have become a "self" medicating society - food, things, etc. I believe very strongly we have forgotten how to stand-up and be counted - whether through voting, or just writing our politicians and telling them what we think. People do not realize that, for every one letter a politician receives, it counts for 1000 letters that were not written. We need to speak up - we need to show up to our lives and stand up for what has made this country so GREAT!
I hope the sun will shine on you soon - when it does I just know you'll have old Glory flying her colors! Take care, be dry - and keep writing... /Nanette

Great journal, Nanette! I couldn't have said it better myself. My husband & I just had this discussion earlier today. A lot of people seem to have forgotten how great this country is & how lucky we are. Thanks to the men & women who have fought & died to create this wonderful country & keep it free. Have a safe Memorial Day.
