In Memory of Bud

IW SGC Siddhis OE Kavanaugh Rinn (aka Bud)
On September 3, 2006 my Havana Brown, Gwendolyn, gave birth to three chubby boys. I quickly named them Bud, Mikey and Guido. It was a lifetime-changing event to help her birth the boys, and then hold these chubby little brown babies in the palm of my hands.

Mikey went on to live in Mississippi. Guido went to his new home and his new "sister" Nahlah, a Russian Blue. And Bud stayed with me to be a show cat.

He loved it! And by the age of less than 9 months he became the youngest alter to ever hold the # 1 spot International as the highest-scoring alter worldwide in The International Cat Association. He kept that spot and then dropped to # 2 by the first of October.

Then right before Halloween, I noticed something was amiss. To make a long story short, Bud was in liver failure due to the kitten food he had been raised on....and which was one of the prime foods pulled off the shelves during the Menu Food Recall. Bud lived until December 6, 2007.

I still miss him, but know that my little brown angel has wings of gold now.

And I cannot think about the other pet owners who have lost their babies due to poisoned food that we fed them, thinking we were doing the best for them.

Rest in peace Bud. And watch over all of the other animals and their owners around the world.

My heart goes out to you for your loss of Bud. I lost a cat to kidney failure years ago. She was young too and it happen so fast. It's even more heartbreaking to know that Bud's suffering could have been prevented if the pet food companies were more careful.

What a beautiful little young boy. So sorry for your loss. I lost one to liver failure, too and I don't think I'll ever get over how tragic and sudden it was. I think of my little Willow all the time. We just never get enough time with them. I wrote a comment earlier on someone else's entry about the recalled pet food. These manufacturer's MUST raise their standards and be completely accountable when something like this happens. There is no excuse for it.

I'm sorry for your loss of Bud. He accomplished a lot in his short life.
Nobody knows for sure what other effects the tainted food may have down the road. RIP little Bud.

I am so sorry and I am not feeling so good right now. When we lost 1 ofour bichons, Tommy October, 2007 suddenly to renal failure, my husband insists the food caused it. However, having 6 other bichons eating the same food didn't make sense. May I ask what food this was? And how do we know it is no longer on the shelves? I am using IAMS for mature dogs and weight loss, IAMS for kittens, and Purina Pro plan Selects for kittens. I hope that these were not the culprits. Again, my heart hurts reading your recollection.

Iams canned food was one of them but I am not sure which one. They claim that their food is good now, but I don't buy my cat Iams anymore because of that. I was giving her the dry which was not recalled.

One of the good foods that was not recalled was Royal Canin (which my cats eat) and the Purina cat canned food. I will never feed Nutro again. My cats don't like IAMs. I used to feed Eukanuba, and I don't think they had any recalls.

Hi -- I'm so sorry for your loss. What I fed was the Nutromax pouch food. His dam was raised on it as a kitten, so I raised the boys on it. The other two moved on to new homes and started eating different food. Bud would eat nothing but that. No dry food. Nothing else (and when I had to finally get him to eat something else after the Nutro was recalled, I found two cans of food he'd eat). I immediately took him to the vet for his kidneys to be tested, and he was fine. But then his liver failed. According to the owner of his sire (she lost three Siamese to it -- same food line!) she works closely with Cornell University and U of Pennsylvania vet schools: more cats whose kidneys were fine, are dying from liver failure. It takes longer to build up the toxins.

I had my Schipperke Moe go into renal failure the October before the recall. And now according to the attorney handling the cases, they are tracking back cases to the summer before the recall! The food he ate was the Purina canned food.

You may want to contact an attorney. I can send you the attorney's information that I have. Let me know and I'll be glad to do that.

My dog after being in ICU for a week is now healthy -- but on medication for the rest of his life.

It makes me so mad.

That is awful. I can't imagine losing my cat this way. I am so sorry.

Thank you for your thoughts. It's never easy...no matter if they're 22 years old and had a long, full life of happiness and fun...

But when they're young like that, and taken away because of tainted food, the anger can't erase the sorrow.

I just think of all of the other pets that were lost because of that, and how many will still die from kidney or liver failure. How sad. It breaks my heart.

This was such a scary thing to go through. I was constantly watching my cat for signs of poisoning and thought for sure she was doomed. To actually have this happen to one of yours had to be so terrible. I hope you are compensated for your anguish and suffering.

What a shame. Bud sounds like he was a wonderful cat who accomplished a lot in his short life. Sorry to hear of your loss.

Thanks. He was special. The Havana Brown used to have a horrible reputation for being hot headed. Judges did not like to handle them. During the past years they bred nicer personalities, but many judges still were concerned they would blow. What was so nice is I had many judges tell me that Bud set such a good example for the breed. And he loved showing (I said he was a diva!). So, in his short life he accomplished a lot more than many cats who show for several years or become breeding cats, have done. You can see more photos of him at www.siddhishavanabrowns.com
