A sad day

My neighbor lost her dog Rudy today. He was a gentle 14+ year old Golden Retriever. He had been slowly failing over the last few months and I suspect that the love of his owner was all that kept him going. The hint of the puppy inside never left him. Last summer I was taking some stuffed toys out to the car to donate. Rudy spotted a stuffed polar bear in the bag. He pounced on the plastic bag, yanked out the bear and trotted around the parking lot holding his prize by the butt over his head. His horrified owner began to chase the "poor old feeble" dog. I had to sit because I was afraid that I would tip over from laughing. Rudy dodged and weaved and out ran his owner until she gave in and let him keep the bear. He was as gentle with the toy as he was with people. He slept with it that night and I hope that it gave him some comfort in his last days. I will miss him

The loss of a pet is hard but I think that never having shared my life with them would be worse

So sorry to hear about Rudy, OS! I know how attached we can get to our neighbor's and friend's pets. Tina and I were chatting yesterday and she was saying poor old Sydney is getting really bad. The arthritis in his hips has now made it so he cannot use the doggie door.

It is hard to see them pass. I wish that they came with a reset button that could be pressed so they would restart and become puppies again

That is a wonderful memory of an obviously great dog. That must have been funny to see the dog make a "run" for it with his "new found" toy. :)

I don't know what was better, seeing him run with the bear held over his head or his embarrassed owner trying to catch him.

It is always sad to see a best friend cross over the Rainbow Bridge or hear of someone else's doing so. A large dog living that many years must have been given quality care.

He was given the kind of care that we wish all pets could have
