Update on Joe

My son, Sean, Rebel, son in law: Joe, and Heather at Christmas
My 28 year old daughter, Heather, called a few minutes ago. She gave me the latest news on my son in law, Joe, who is only 34 years old. The place on his back is Stage 4 Melanoma. I am sure we all suspected as much, but it still comes as a shock to the system. I think there is about a 10 to 15 percent survival rate with it. He is anemic, which made his arm ache after all the blood was drawn. He has also been diagnosed with COPD; and we are not going to know the level on the Lymphoma for a while. First they are doing an MRI of his brain, an x-ray of his chest, and the blood workup to see what the big picture was. The reason he was not happy with the internist, was that he thought he was seeing an Oncologist, and he feels that being sent by the Dermatologist to an Internist was a wasted week, when his life and his treatment might well be measured in weeks...
It makes no sense to send him to the Internist, but the internist will get a hefty fee for ordering the tests, and for seeing Joe, anyway. That is the doc that the Dermatologist office set up for him, telling him it was an Oncologist. I know some people...who will remain nameless...will get mad that I think he should have gone directly to an Oncologist, but what would you want for your family member? Certainly not a wasted week...
He is researching his own Oncologist, not a referral from the other two. He is looking at a group in Gainesville, Fl, about 5 hours away by car. I do have a cousin who works in the Research Department at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and I am in contact with her to get a good recommendation.

Julie I am sorry to hear this but I think it was kind of expected for you anyway. One thing you have to remember is Cancer is a very scary word but we have come a long way is surgical techniques and the survival rate is so much higher than it used to be.
Joe will have a lot to do with his healing, he should read all he can on the subject and understand the procedure and exactly what they will be doing. If he goes into it blindly it may be a lot for him to absorb.
When I had my cancer surgery I was lucky to have watched a surgery on the Health Channel. I knew exactly how it would be performed and how extensive the skin grafts would be. If I had not researched this I would have been totally overwhelmed when I first saw myself after surgery.
The more you and your family know the better it will be for you when the procedures begin. You are wise to use the internet and find a good Cancer Surgeon in the area where Joe lives.
I wish you all my very best and please do not give up hope, miracles happen all the time and there are more cancer survivors all the time.

Thank you, Carol. I am trying my best to maintain a positive attitude. It is so hard, but everyone's kind thoughts, stories and Prayers truly do help. It is good to know we aren't alone, and people genuinely care about him. He is doing lots of research, and we are doing it too. From what I gather, the Melanoma is the worst thing. The Lymphoma is not as bad, but together, I don't know. Anyway a good Oncologist will be able to help us understand it. God Bless You, Carol. Thank you for your personal story, it means so much.

I will keep you and Joe and Heather in my prayers and will also pray that the strenght you need to get through this is available to you at all times. A wasted week is such a sad thought when dealing with this and may your belief in all that is good be a source of power for you and everyone.

Thank you, Lucy. I am so appreciative of the kind thoughts and Prayers. My Z2 friends have stopped me from pulling my hair out in frustration, at least. We are a good strong family, and we will get through this with God's help.

Julie, I'm so sorry. This is such a tough thing that your family is going thru but when you don't feel you can trust your doctors to look out for your best interests it's got to be so much more stressful. It's great that Joe is questioning his doctors and doing his research to make sure he gets the best care he can. It's very smart and powerful. Please make sure you take care of yourself too. Read Patty's success story as often as you need to in order to keep your spirits up. You know I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts as we all will.

And thanks for posting the photo of your family. They look wonderful.

Thank you, Cheryl. I added pics today of Joe and Heather's Surprise Wedding Reception. They eloped on July 4th,2006 on the beach in Vero Beach, Florida. So my mother in law had a nice party for them, with a cake and such. It was a very happy time, so I posted them and some of their babies: their 2 MinPins and black lab.

Will keep you and your family in my prayers. It's aggravating to have wasted a week, but he would have had to have these tests. Once he finds an oncologist, he can take the MRI, X-rays, and blood results with him. I wish him the best!

Thanks, Cheryle. I know that the tests were needed. But the oncologist could have ordered them, and he would have the reports immediently. Now we have to get them transferred to the new doc. Another wasted movement.

Thank you, Kathy. I told Heather about it. She seemed floored. She is also having a really tough time dealing with this. She said she cried today, at work, when a co-worker said for her to stop talking and mix the drinks...Their boss came and told the B**** to leave Heather alone, as she doesn't know what she is going through. But, my baby doesn't cry. She never has. She won't let you see her cry.

You're right, a wasted week! If they know stage four he should have been referred to the oncologist! My sister-in-law had stage four melanoma, so far she has had no reoccurence and it's been approx 15-20 years. But melanoma can be a tricky little bugger so make sure he does his research and looks for the best in the field.

THANK YOU, Patty. That is the first person I know survived it. Bless you and your sister. The wasted week hurts me like a fresh wound. You have no idea how much your post helps me. I was feeling so hopeless. We still have to address the Lymphoma, which is expected to be Stage 4 too. But he is a wonderful man. I wonder if the stuff he breathed on Sept 11th, 2001 could have caused this or the COPD? It's so frightening...

Was he at "Ground zero"? I've heard there have been some issues with the men, women, and animals that were there. My sister-in-law never noticed the "mole" her mom did. I remember her going to have it removed and going back 3-4 more times as they said they had to "go deeper".She is aware how melanoma can how YEARS later in different sites of the body but as I said so far she's been lucky. Let's hope Joe has the same outcome.

Thank you Patty. Yes, he was at Ground Zero. The docs said this has been there for a couple of years. You know how hard it is to see something on your back. Heather didn't like the looks of it, and nagged him till he finally went to the doc. Thank Heavens.
