Siriusly? Teeth Removal...

My kitty Sirius - with the chronic gingivitus and overly-sensative immune system - recently had another depo shot along with antibiotics for said condition. The depo also cleared up his scaly skin which rouses its ugly head about every 5 months, give or take (the immune system issue).

The chronic problem is that said immune system thinks the plaque on Sirius' teeth is something to go into overdrive over, and though the depo and antibiotics do the trick for a while, it isn't healthy to keep giving him steriods about every three months. In the meantime, if the teeth cleaning and meds don't last long enough, his gums get sore and he goes off his food, is grouchy, antisocial and overall unhappy.

Though I am also giving him a new product that is an enzyme meant to control plaque build up, the vet has recommended as an option to have his back teeth removed. Though I understand the reasoning for it, and know that supposedly he would still be able to eat dry food, etc, what bothers me is that his teeth themselves are good, healthy, strong. If they were diseased or infected, I wouldn't hesitate. But it's the plaque his body fights, not the teeth themselves.

Has anyone had a cat they had to have their teeth removed surgically? Thoughts on how the cat did?
