Power?

We lost our power last night so it got me thinking. What do you have to do or have on hand that's special because of your animals when you lose power? Do you have any future plans for you home because of your animals? What emergency plans do you have in place for them?

We keep peroxide around for the fish tanks and pond (battery back up pumps are on the list to get). In the winter we have a wood burner going in so no one freezes. We have plans to go solar as soon as possible so we don't lose power and it won't be a problem any more. Plus I hate the electric bill!! lol We also have plans for fresh water collection and gray water collection. We have several big gardens either in or going in, I have grapes, berries, vegis, melons, sunflowers, mushrooms, and fruit trees, mostly for the animals. We have a big turtle pond and special area going in just for them. I have an animal yard in the works (its a small area of plush grass totally fenced in) for the ferrets and such to play in. We have a dog fence going up with a new outside door which will give them the freedom to come and go by themselves. We're converting a small attic area (off our bedroom) into a cat play room. My big walk in storage closet is becoming a fox den eventually (before I bring home my fennec). My living room is getting set up for a tortoise, and we have lots of built in cages and such going in. We have an outdoor bunny coop going in and we have to rebuild the pigeon coop and we already built a pond in our office.
We've only had our house for a little over a year so we have alot to do but we bought it with all the plans for making our animals as comfortable as we are.

my neighbors and I have made an agreement that we will text each other if the power goes out so if one of us isn't home we can make proper arrangements.. when the temps get into the 110's you can't take any chances..
I always have a knapsack ready since I am always running late for things..

That is a really good question. We had a huge power outage last summer in St. Louis during a major heatwave. It was really hard on the animals here because most of the hotels wouldn't take in dogs and cats. Great reminder to go out and buy some fans just in case.

Battery operated!!! My fans didn't work and there was no ice or lights along with no A/C. What a miserable mess that was.

We don't run our air anyway so that's not a problem but I didn't even think about the fans. Geeze I have got to get solar power, we'll suffocate if the fans all quit.

We don't loose power much, apparently we're on the same power line as some businesses and expensive homes, so if it ever goes out, it's right back on. But if we did, we have food and water supplies I suppose.

I haven't done much I'm afraid. I'm still trying to collect enough cat carriers in case I have to evacuate for some reason. Most of my cats do a great job of finding very cool places to sleep when the electric has been out during the summer. During the winter they tend to enjoy the weather but if it gets too much for them they pile under the quilts with me. I'm glad to hear that you're moving off grid.

I have an entire wall of carriers in my basement. lol of course I also cages in the garage and basement and 10 or 12 fish tanks waiting to be set up. I could open a used pet supply place and most if it was free or came from garage sales. I just can't say no to cheap pet stuff.
