Louie, my blind dog

As I write this, Louie, who is blind, is outside chasing what he thinks may be some wild animal at the bird feeder. Louie has been with me nearly 3 years now, he was recued from a terrible situation in Dec 2004. Louie was part of a group of nearly 70 animals kept in deplorable conditions, chained outside with a hubcap for a water bowl, waiting for a rainstorm to fill the dirty "bowl" with what became a green sludge passing for water. There were 12 dogs in this group and all were brought to the Washington Area Humane Society to be kept in confinement while their fate was decided in the courts. Louie received vet care for his eyes, but it was too late, Louie will never see again. Louie also drank so much water that he was in danger of flushing out his electrolytes, so his water intake had to be monitored. When Louie was signed over to the Humane Society, I brought him home. At first he stayed in his crate, but barked to tell me when he had to go out. Amazingly, he was housebroken!!. Louie now stays on the first floor, has a favorite bed in the entrance hall, and barks when the phone rings. He has acclimated himself to the fenced yard and is comfortable there when he goes out. Louie lives with 3 other dogs, is kind and wants to clean everyone's ears. I love to see him stretched out in comfort and warmth, he deserves it. Everyone loves this dog, and he returns this love a thousandfold. I am so glad to have taken this special needs dog into my home.

I read this and have tears in my eyes. I can just picture Louie barking at who-knows-what-he-makes-up in his mind, taking the job of cleaning everyone else's ears, feeling safe outside in the boundaries he can feel, and alerting his family of the dangerous phone! To top it off, he now has a FAVORITE bed. Louie went from a hubcap filled with stagnant rain water to a favorite bed...in his home...where he has a loving family.

I am so glad you shared Louie's story.

How well you write, Cassie. You captured Louie perfectly, and he is a happy dog, safe and cared for and most importantly, loved for the rest of his life, and he is a fairly young dog. Thank you for reading his story.

There are so many people leary of taking in a special needs animal. More should read your entry to see that when you give of yourself you are rewarded ten-fold!

I think sometimes,( even tho I was myself a bit "leery" of taking Louie, not because of his blindness but because of his constant twirling and peeing all over his large cage at WAHS.) that people think they might not be able to deal with the handicap, when it is usually so much easier than we think. I am so glad I took Louie, he makes me happy every day, knowing I did something right. I get so much satisfaction from seeing him unafraid and happy. So he has given me much more than Ican ever give him. Thanks for your kind words. Pat

It's like "Tuesdays with Morrie." The friends who came to see Morrie didn't think they would be able to help Morrie with his physical needs. The first time they had to assist him in relieving himself, they balked at the idea. They discovered (much to their surprise) that it was no big deal. Till the very end, Morrie kept teaching life lessons. Special souls like Louie and Morrie are the best teachers of love and life.

I agree. This was written way back in February and only now did I discover it. More people have to read this touching, inspirational story.

The two of you are being rewarded with each other. Thank you for sharing that story.

Thanks, DeeDee he is really a kind and loving dog and he went through so very much. He is even getting better at the water drinking problem.

I love to read stories like yours. It's heartwarming to know a dog who had a horrible life is now so loved and happy.

After reading this, I think there should be a place for the best Zootoo animal stories and, with the authors' permissions, a book of these stories could be published. I love James Herriot and your story reminds me of some of his most endearing stories. A book of these would be a big hit.

There are lots of cute stories on this site, but stories like yours are exceptional. I could write about my dogs doing funny daily things, or the cats chasing each other or their tails, or the antics of the parakeets. A visit to the vet could take up many journals. ALL BORING. No one would be interested in reading those except my family and perhaps very close friends who are kind enough to humor me. ;-)

Just an idea.

That is a wonderful idea. Not that my story about Louie is such a big thing, but there are so many more people out there that have helped animals and continue to help them no matter what. Actually I would love to tell the story about a dog I once had called Toby. He somehow knew to take care of my Mother when she became senile. It is a wonderful heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking story of a wonderful dog who, without training, turned himself into a "service dog", I will always be grateful to him and hope he and my Mother are together right now.

I didn't see this until just now and wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your writing this comment. Louie is a happy dog and I love to see him curled up without a care in the world. I always wonder, when we rescue these dogs and cats(through our Humane Officers() how many more are we not seeing and getting to? Thanks again. Pat
