KC fights on

Little KC was found dumped in a park about 13 months ago. She is a small beagle, much too small to fit into her beagle ears. She is estimated to be about 9 years old and when brought to the West Deer shelter, it was noticed immediately that she didn't drink water, so a trip to the vet was made the next morning, and it turned out that she had a broken jaw. The Doctor said that she had been someone's punching bag, she has so many broken but healed bones. I adopted her in April '07, as she had a seizure and I thought it best that she have someone with her at night in my home. She was usually caged at West Deer, which is a small shelter where the dogs are usually loose, (they can use a dog door to go out.) But we were afraid to let her run with the dogs when no one was there for fear she would get bumped and knocked over, she was so little and frail, with a wired jaw. The other dogs were careful around her when she was out, they avoided running into her and treated her as though they realized that she was older and frailer than they were.
In my home she improved with the additional exercise, but sadly, it turns out that a lump she has on her left back leg is not a non-malignant lipoma but instead a mast cell cancer. She has been to several vets, chemo is not indicated in her case and so I am trying a holistic approach as modern medicine cannot do much at this point. She is still on some drugs, but eats only meat and vegetables, with fish oil, vitamins, and some other things to help her immune system. She is lively and being a beagle has a huge appetite. She likes to walk on the trail with my other dogs and all in all is doing well, and has a good quality of life. I am hoping for some more time with her, so far she has done better than anyone thought she would. KC is a true little fighter and doesn't know she has this disease. KC had to be put to sleep on March 5, to spare her any further pain, as she was going downhill fast. I will always remember her for her spirit and her loving nature.
