Heart Murmur's ~ I need to learn more
26 comments
We just came home from Doc's and Bubbles my foster dog has been diagnosed with a very bad heart murmur. She is going to be taking Lasix in the pill form. Doc also said her blood protein levels were really high and suggested a vegetarian diet for a while to see if this helps. Bubbles is about 16 and other than this seems to be doing pretty good.( Other than being visually challenged and hearing impaired)She is a sweet little dog who has had a tough life and I want to make sure the last part of it will be full of lots of love and good care, that's what she never had.If anyone has any other advice or things that "worked" for their pet that has the same issues, well, Bubbles and I would love to hear from you...Thanks

I've found that keeping a heart murmur dog calm will help a lot more than most medications alone. Don't take her jogging or play a lot of running games (no agility courses, flyball or schutzhund). I'm sure this won't be a problem for you since Bubbles is likely pretty low-key anyway. I'd suggest a lot of lap time, quiet games, and "low-key" exercise.

Brea did send some wonderful sites and the 1st one was very good, packed full of great info. You may want to bookmark for yourself, great sites! Today was stressful for her, I doubt she has ever been to a vet,she was not a happy camper taking blood, but they were very kind and loving towards her, and now at least we know what is going on so we can help her.

Thank you for your encouraging words, it really helps to hear other people's experiences. I look forward to the Lasix making a difference for Bubbles. Sorry also to hear your kitten.

when you say you had to watch his diet carefully, can you tell me more? Was Duncan on a vegetarian diet? She didn't get an ultra-sound today, after Doc looked at the blood work and listened to her heart he was for certain that it was a loud murmur, plus he said she has some fluid in her lungs. He asked me if she has been coughing, and she has not. She goes for her little toodle around the block every morning and then snoozes.

I'm hoping so too, I will do whatever I can to help the "Bubs", she's a good little girl!

I am so sorry to hear your dog has been diagnosed with a heart murmur. We treated both cats and dogs for heart murmurs at the vet where I worked. I would want to know as much information as possible if it were my pet too.
I found some websites where you can read more information. One of the sites is for herbal remedies but don't give your dog anything new without prior approval from your vet.

Lola is taking Enalapril Maleate for her blood pressure and it does seem to be helping. She's been more frisky and wiggly starting a few weeks after taking it. And she hardly ever coughs any more. She goes to the vet for her annual check up in a few weeks so hopefully the vet will see some improvement.

Thanks for your good wishes. I'll keep Bubbles in my thought too. Her life has been tough enough. She sure doesn't need anymore problems

the first sight is amazing, it even has audio clips of a "regular" heartbeat and a heart murmur...
