Chained Dogs

After going thru the Cutest Pets Contest and looking at all the adorable dogs, it just makes me see red when I see people taking a pic of a poor, pathetic dog chained to a dog house. Dogs are pack animals and aren't meant to be alone 24/7. That's why chained dogs bite because they're bored, depressed, etc. I HATE SEEING DOGS CHAINED TO A DOGHOUSE. And to think people would take a picture of that as if it's ok. Had to let off steam.

First of all, I am appalled that everyone would jump to a specific conclusion as to "why" that dog is chained. I give my two dogs all the attention and love in the world, but my American Bulldog is aggressive to strangers and I fear that something bad may happen which could inevitably result in a lawsuit or worse, my dog being put to sleep. With this being said, when I take my dog to my in-laws, I sometimes have to chain (because they do not have a fences in yard) her when there are small children that I can see are agitating my dog. It is not my house and it is not my place to dictate who can be around my dog. Here I am doing the responsible thing to not harm anyone or put a child in harms way and there are people like you juding us. If you're going to tell me that I am a bad pet owner and should be banned from zootoo because I "chain" my dog or even may say I can't control my dog, then so be it. You can't read a dogs mind and you never know what they are truly capable of doing no matter how great of a person/dog trainer you think you are. A little precaution can NEVER hurt anyone--not even a dog. So please, don't be so quick to judge.

I didn't think that was the intention of the comment about dogs being chained. In your situation, your dog is chained for a short length of time. It is obviously not permenately chained. There are dogs where you KNOW they live a life chained to a dog house or tree. The dead giveaways in this situation is there is no lawn, just dirt. In these cases I have to 100% agree with what was said. Why would anyone want to give an animal a life of loneliness and solitude? Not to mention a small circle to walk around in and no appropriate place to urinate or deficate away from its living conditions. There is no need for this in my opinion.

I'm sorry you misunderstood. There's a difference in "tying out a dog" and chaining him to a doghouse for life. Before I had fencing I had to tie mine out too but they weren't tied out 24/7/365. Those are the dogs I'm talking about. If you'd go to the cutest pet contest on the home page and click on dogs, and keep going thru and voting for the cutest, you will eventually see a poor soul chained to a doghouse with dirt all around him and a pathetic look on his face....and there are several like that. Tying a dog out occasionally is not bad in my book.....chaining all the time is. Sorry you misunderstood. I don't consider you a bad pet owner at all.

I think chains are cruel and unusual punishment as the phrase goes. I am sick to my heart when I see that and I just can't understand the logic of the owners. Check the water dishes, the food bpwls. How can this be justified? Why own a pet to chain it to a tree.. Why leave it outside no matter the weather? I am glad someone else understand the angst I feel about this subject.

I agree completely and do not vote for animals in cages, on chains etc.

I'd like to send them a msg. telling them that a chained dog is never cute, it's abusive and sad, but I'm sure I'd be reported to zootoo and I'm trying to gain points for the shelter around here. So sad tho.
