Yes, that's a dramatic "headline" but it's basically what happened. I just spoke w/ a new local reptile fancier a few minutes ago, asking about Camo. (The little iguana he's been attempting to rescue from friends who weren't taking care of him properly.) I saw him in May, right after Gnarla's death--I swear, it was like a sign--and brought Charles (the guy) all kinds of decent UVB lights, instructed him on proper diet for Camo, etc. After all, Camo looked maybe 6 months old, and I was told he was over a year! No UVB lighting/bad diet is a recipe for disaster--he'd be a candidate for metabolic bone disease, it would seem certain. Since my ZardGarden, chockfull of mustard & collard greens is in full bloom, I thought I'd take over a bunch for Camo to nosh on.
Anyway, since it's been over a month, I called to check on him. Apparently, last month, his owners came back and literally yanked him away, Charles' pleas about Camo's nutritional deficiencies falling on deaf ears. They insisted he was "just fine" and didn't need special lights, etc. "They would rather see him die than have me take care of him," Charles spat bitterly over the phone. "I still have all the supplies I bought for him & they weren't interested."
"That's awful, I feel so bad for the poor little guy!" I clucked.
"So do I, you don't even know..."
So I guess Stupidity wins another round, at poor Camo's expense. I am mourning him already.
