Will My Animals Go with Me?

I would like to share my favorite James Herriot story. It's "The Card Over the Bed," from "James Herriot's Dog Stories," although I think the title should have been "God Is Near." It is about this old woman, Miss Stubbs, who has been bedridden for a long time, but never complains about her lot in life. There is a piece of cardboard hanging over Miss Stubbs' bed which reads "God Is Near". A lovely woman, Mrs. Broadwith, looks after her. As the story begins, she has three dogs and two cats--all are ten years and older. "The one thing which brought some light into the life of the brave old woman was the transparent devotion of this shaggy bunch whose eyes were never far from her face."

James makes an emergency visit to her cottage to tend to one of her longtime companions. Sadly, he is too late to help Ben, a Sealyham. James stays with Miss Stubbs while Mrs. Broadwith leaves to ask a friend to bury the dog. When they are alone, Miss Stubbs tells James that she knows she is "next," but that she not at all afraid of dying. She has only one fear. She has been told all of her life that animals have no souls and asks James, "Will my animals go with me?"

I truly believe that, if there IS a place where we go after dying, that all of the animals who have passed on are there too. And I definitely believe in the "Rainbow Bridge" concept.
I have heard of people questioning whether or not animals will "go to heaven" and such, and do they "have souls"?
. . . . what comes to my mind in answer to these questions is YES and YES! : )
Our beloved pets have faaaaaar too much spirit to have no soul! Each is unique and precious, just like people.
I have no doubt that when my time comes, I will be reunited with Tessy, Suzie, Sadie, Sheba, and BuddyKat

I believe you will meet them. They will either be there when you arrive or follow you when their time comes. I have no doubt.

Oh, I agree with you. After I lost my daughter, I had a dream about many of my beloved pets who had passed away. In the dream, all of them were so happy, healthy, and beautiful.

There was one, Jonas, who had a crooked spine, terrible limp from a bone being broken but never set (he was a stray before I adopted him as a senior citizen), and an ongoing fungal ear infection (he was a cocker). When I saw Jonas in the dream, I was sure that there was a mistake because he was running freely with a straight-as-an-arrow spine and not a hint of a limp. I could not believe it was Jonas. However, as I got closer to him, I could smell his ears!

I think my daughter gave me that dream so I would know that all of my little angels were at peace, and she made sure I knew it was true by providing me with a very memorable smell.

What a beautiful dream and I truly believe it was NOT just a dream. I have never had that experience but I know I will see them again, all of them. I am sure they are all healthy and happy. Thanks for sharing that. Pat
