My mom's answer apparently is composting it. Traveller, being a normal horse, is a hearty producer of horse manure, and she collects and saves it to put in special compost enclosures behind the corral. She proudly showed off her three compost set ups when I visited last Friday, and I have to admit that the lack of smell was impressive as was Mom's willingnees to turn Traveller's waste into something useful. She chattered about all matter of things to me that I really didn't follow such as keeping it moist enough but not too moist and anaerobic vs. aerobic decomposition and its effects on the smell. I could tell she was passionate about what she was doing though, and when she got excited that two of the three heaps were putting off heat, I couldn't help but be happy for her (the heat means they're actually decomposing the waste into fertilizer).
I'm just glad that I'm not the one wearing kitchen gloves and turning over horse crap in hopes of having something to make the grass and other flora grow.
