What Have You Learned, Dorothy?

Here's another valuable lesson.: Cross those "T's" and dot those "I's."

This journal was about what I learned from the last contest, but it wasn't about my pets. I'm pretty sure that's a cardinal sin. Here's the correction.

Morgan has learned to settle, stay, and lay. She loves to play catch and tug of war every evening. It is really fun to watch Morgan and Roz "roughhouse" every night. Morgan is a year old now.

There. That couldn't possibly break any rules or be any more dull.

Good point. I needed to read this. While I really want my shelter to win the makeover or at least one of the cash awards, it really is a group effort, and I can't neglect my own pets and th rest of my personal life and responsibilities by spending hours on here.

Everything should be in moderation, shouldn't it, to achieve a HEALTHY balance? ;-)

Right on! I love that zootoo limits the points. I makes the whole point of the site, well, enjoying our pets! Zootoo wouldn't exist without people who were nuts about animals, and it's great to have a community to share, where people will actually look at all your pics and videos and not think you're bonkers! Without limitations though, there is less opportunity to get those pics, videos, and stories we put in our journals. I spend lots of time with my pets, the foster cat, and I am at the shelter for at least a couple hours a week (on top of petfinder). I'm glad there were improvements made since the last round - and I hope more are made. What a great community!

How right you are, Heather. I can't tell you how many dorky videos I made during the last contest, how many times I went through news article after news article to find one I hadn't read or one that I could comment on, or how many times I searched and searched for a particular product to review. THAT wasn't much fun. I am so glad Zootoo set limits to leave room for enjoyment!

And what I have learned is that I must have done something right to have such a wonderful and caring daughter. The animals of Jersey City and I are blessed to have you as a part of our lives. Though there are some tough areas in the city, we are fortunate to be in a place where we can make a difference for the animals and the community! And we are making a difference whether we win or lose this contest.

You should be very proud of her. Her passion to help her mother is obvious. And what a great daughter to take the time to work for such a worthy cause. Good luck!

You have learned alot, you are doing it for the dogs...good for you

I missed spending time with my GSDs, my cats, and those zany parakeets! They add so much to my life.

I think you're right. I'm much more relaxed about the contest this time around. (That's probably helped by the fact that my computer is down and I have to got to the library to get on) I do try to do two journal postings a day when we're in a contest period - if I can find good material. Sometimes it's actually hard to do a posting because I've wandered off.

FYI - I have not had good luck with book reviews staying on Zootoo so now I just review them on my journal. (Or I hope too) I read this really funky snake book recently that just attracted me for some reason - I don't even like snakes.

Well, I guess I'll have to check out your profile page to read your book reviews.

This is the first time I'm really interested in the shelter makeover contest. Last time I didn't really get into it and really didn't spend much time on the site. My mom is the director of Liberty Humane which is the shelter in first place right now so i've decided to spend parts of my day doing this for her. This makeover would mean the world to my mom and she and her employees work so unbelievably hard to maintain their "shelter" which is no more than a converted garage with too many pets that we wind up all having to foster sometimes. I live 215 miles away from the shelter and have two foster kittens just because there is no other place for them to go. For those of you who haven't been to Jersey City, NJ, you aren't missing much. It's a bad neighborhood with a lot of TERRIBLE dog fighting owners (hence our OVERWHELMING number of pitbulls brought in on a daily basis) so this shelter really needs the help. Recently the big animal shelter in town was shut down due to bad conditions/animal cruelty and my moms shelter took ALL of their animals skyrocketing their number of animals. So maybe I post comments, journals, pictures etc just for the points, but I'm sorry I don't feel guilty doing it because I AM doing it for the love of animals and to give the ones in Jersey City a better life in the shelter.

I am glad you ARE doing it for the animals. I didn't think anyone should feel guilty about pounding for points. It's great that you're helping out your mother and her shelter.

I entered the contest at the very end of January and accumulated over 50,000 points by the time it ended. I was MaxFund's top point earner. In addition, I spent a considerable amount of time helping out three other shelters as much as I could. I even posted craiglist announcements for these other shelters, trying to increase their points by adding members.

In my case (and I can only speak for myself), I've been there and done that. In many ways, it would have been better to put the same EXTRAORDINARY level of time and energy into other worthwhile projects to help MaxFund.

The best part of this site: MY FRIENDS. Period. That doesn't mean that I don't care about animals.

I am more the Alice type myself....curiouser & curiouser....The shelter contest..I'm over it. I chose an underdog shelter close to the area that I'm from and with me being it's only active supporter....nothings going to happen. Why waste the effort and get the panties in a wad . I have my own furry people that need me more.
I'm too busy out racking up the "life points". Taking the dogs to local critter oriented events, trying to socialize my former hunting beagle, enjoying time with my geriatric great dane, letting my pocket size rat terrier be the big dog on campus... And providing tangible usable items for the local animal shelters. If I can't give them a make-over...I can make things a little more comfy or easy for the beasties while they are there. So I'm cherishing the small things . Cant' ask for better than that.

"I quite agree with you. And the moral of that is: Be what you would seem to be, or if you'd like it put more simply: Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise."

What a great message!

Here's 20 Life Points to you for socializing your beagle instead of taking his photo for a review!

Add another 100 for cherishing your time with your senior great dane instead of reading a news article!

Add 30 more Life Points for allowing your tiny terrier's personality to blossom instead of uploading a video of him eating!

Take another 75 for hunting down needed items for local shelters instead of voting for the cutest pet on pet wars!

I like the quote at the end. My favorite friends are the ones who have high expectations of me. They make me a better person and they keep me on my toes. Best part, they never let me get by with bad form!

I started out planning to add my comments about taking the time to enjoy the site but I have to tell you first that I just finished Ken Fosters' book Dogs I Have Met and the People They Found - (he also wrote Dogs Who Found Me )
Both such wonderful books and I thought someone might want to read them :)
And while I have no "good" china ( just Corelle in this house ) I loved the descriptions below - from egg cups to cabinets - it all sounds beautiful ...
I also wanted to say that I do agree that this time around I think taking it slow, taking deep breaths every day and actually enjoying the contest will be what it's all about - I do intend to work hard - my shelter is in desperate need - but I no longer have the time, patience or fortitude to do what I did last year..
I love to read the journals and frequently spend so much time reading I don't take the time to comment , but I don't want to lose that portion of Zootoo - it's where we have all connected and gained friends and support and fun..
So thanks for this journal - it's a wonderful reminder to slow life down to the pace that is comfortable and cozy - like that favorite worn robe or pair of slippers...

This has become a potpourri of topics, hasn't it? Isn't that lovely? Very similar to a real live conversation around a kitchen table. Book recommendations, collectors' stories of their hunts for particular treasures, and now favorite slippers.

That reminds me, do you ever find a pair of shoes or slippers or jeans that are so comfortable that you go back to get a second pair before they're discontinued??

Oh, and THAT reminds me of the time that I loved a vanilla-scented lotion by Victoria's Secret that I received as a gift. When I went to Victoria's Secret for another bottle, it had been discontinued!! Every time I went to a mall and saw a Victoria's Secret, I would ask if they Vanilla Lace returned. Finally, after several years, I received a positive reply. Apparently, there was so much demand for it, that they decided to sell it again. I bought enough to last me into my senior years!!! LOL Clearly, I can trust Victoria's Secret!

I enjoyed the journals over the summer and hope that people keep doing them in the same spirit and not just for points. The lap top makes it easier to jump on and stay there so I hope that I don't get to addicted to checking in to see where things are. I have just about run out of stuff to review and I don't think that I will have any videos in the near future so I will just keep reading and babbling

Cassie3

Babble away! LOL

I've read everyone's comments and agree with so many of them. Even though I've got so much to do at the moment around the house, I keep coming back and checking Zootoo several times a day. I'm not trying to earn mega points like last time, and unfortunately haven't earned that many at all. I'm logging on to see how my Zootoo family is doing. That's the reason I return to the site. You may not know that I've read your journals because I don't always write a comment, but I do care about what happens in the lives of some of the very special people on this website.

The pressure of the competition is off of my shoulders, a little of the guilt remains, but the insanity is definitely not worth it.

Enjoy life. It's far too short to be wasted killing yourself over earning points that are meaningless in the real world. Earn life points for yourself--look at the world around you, embrace those you love whether they're two-footed, four-footed, feathered, finned or scaled.

Hugs to everyone.

Oh, you put that SO well! For the rest of the day I'll be thinking about how to earn Life Points. I'll give myself mega bonus points for not telling anyone about how many points I've accumulated... ;-)

I do feel like it's a bit of a chore to make sure I've earned points in every area. I'm tired of posting lame videos just to earn the points. My cats do cute things everyday but I don't always have the video camera in my hand when they do it.

Cassie3
Cassie3

How true! You said a mouthful with "lame videos." I sure have turned out some duds!

There are so many times that I wish I had my camera, but only to catch a great moment...not a product in use.

I think that joining zt at the last part of the 1st contest made me step back, take a breath, and regroup before I even had the chance to wet my feet. There was so much ugliness on here, that it was kind of frightening.
I could totally understand the passion, the cause, the desperation, etc.,in all the shelters that need so much help, and I felt so bad and remembered thinking "Why can't they split the million" between the top 20?I just wanted to help every one that worked so hard,I guess.
Anyway,I think that when it became ugly, people(in general) began to lose all the positive reasons of why they were here. I think that when that happens, your whole life becomes distorted, and out of control.
I guess what I'm getting to,is that it's good to hear that people have learned from the experiences that they've gone through, seen, etc. You don't ever have to give up the cause, but when you began to lose your self as a person, and things start getting out of control in your own life,it's hard to remain focused, and realize that although the contest needs to be taken serious,it also has to be something that you're enjoying.
If you're killing yourself,if you have your personal life stretched so thin,if you're fighting and purposely flagging and doing other mean behaviors, then you have lost the reason of why you came here.-I personally came to meet other animal loving friends,to gain knowledge,to hear of what's going on in life around me.I wanted to hear the causes, and to find tools that could help me change/or better enrich the animals lives.I came here to try and make a difference, even if it is a small one.
I came here to enjoy.lol
I wanna hear about the walks, and read about the great places that people live, and the wildlife that they share it with.I like the slow moving simple way of life!!!
I'll stop myself now before I end up writing a journal on yours!lol

LOL! Very well said Sharon. I like your way of thinking and agree wholeheartedly.

Cassie3

Well, I'm glad you didn't stop any sooner.

One of the reasons I love my animals so much is that they can't help but introduce simplicity into my life. The cats are happy with a bit of petting, good food, a warm place to curl up. The dogs live for their daily walks, food is secondary to spending time with me. The birds are a reminder of how fragile our lives our, that we should sing a simple song to each other...because a happy tune goes a long way in turning a mood.

I agree . . I also think sometimes we are so worried about getting points that people don't take the time to really read and comment on journals and really communicate with one another which I think is the fun part.

I am guilty. I skim through the news super quick and never finish the entire article. I don't see as many journals as I used to because everyone else is busy earning points too. I go searching through the most recent just to find something new.

Yes! Yes! Yes! It's unfortunate that the points become the End All, Be All. I like the human and animal part of this site. I'm rather tired of the preaching by the cheerleaders of "Get Your Community Involved!" Rah.

Blah. I want more than cheer; I want action. Don't tell me how much you want to help me. Help me! Empty words are just that--empty words.

My friends write anything BUT empty words in their journals. Their photos are snapshots of their lives and their lives are anything but empty!

You have this great way of saying exactly what's on my mind. I couldn't agree more.

I agree. It is about the friends.

I agree with you. I wasn't here for the first competition, but when I first got on ZT in July I spent a lot of time...it was so addictive. I've managed to get a better balance lately, which is better for me and the girls.

PS - I also LOVE to read non fiction. The last book I read was Dog Days by Jon Katz. I really liked it and will do a review if I can ever add it or ZT adds it for me.

When you do your review, please let me know.

You might like "In Short," a collection of nonfictional short stories. I brought it with me whenever I knew I'd be waiting (waiting rooms, waiting for an event to start, waiting to pick up someone from the airport, etc.).

Thanks for the tip. I'll check our library for it. Still can't add products, but will let you know when I can and do the review on Dog Days.

Nice to hear from you Martha and Carol!! ;-)

Very funy...the consequences of the 1st zt contest! Not so funny was becoming a compulsive obsessive type while adding points. Everything else in my life was neglected. I won't let that happen this time. If you don't hear from me for weeks it'll be because I've taken a break in order to ward off any repeat of that behavior! But yes, the new contest will be so much better and this time enjoy eachother without a thought as to "competition". We have some major things in common...our love of animals and this planet.
..also painting, photography, antiques, books :) :)

Get outta here!! It's too bad that you live so far away. You're not the only one of my friends who loves antiques. I love hunting for them at garage and estate sales, and secondhand stores. You never know when you'll find a treasure or a piece to match your mother's china.

So...read any good books lately??? ;-)

"My Cat Spit McGee", by Willie Morris. I love this book. If we lived in the same time zone I'd leave a copy on your doorstep.

Cassie3

What's it about? Have you done a review on Zootoo?

I did do a review...made a tiny error tho'. I said Spit McGee was a rescue kitten, but that was his mother actually! It doesn't really matter...the story is about how a dog loving cat loathing man, (the author actually), learns the mysteries and joys of having a feline friend. It's a true story ... beautifully written.

I need to make a list of these books.

I feel the same way - When I first started on ZOOTOO I was on around the clock. Lately I have settled down to what will work into my life. I love Antiques and have many beautiful pieces Portland has several lovely Antique Stores . I have been collecting California Pottery for years, Franciscan Desert Rose, only the original from California. It is so much fun to try to find each new piece....

I don't know if it is considered antique but my grandmother's china is the franciscan dessert rose . . she has had it since before I was born . . and I am 38!

Cassie3
Cassie3

It's definitely vintage and will become more collectible as time goes on, because there will be fewer and fewer pieces.

Yes it has been around since 1946 - my grandmother had a set and I did not like it much as a child but grew into it I guess. I have a full service for 12 and many, many other pieces added throw the years. It is so much fun looking for that one special item..

I looked up Franciscan Pottery Desert Rose. I've seen it many times. It's very pretty. Do you collect only vintage pieces?

Yes although I do have some of the newer pieces made in England. There is just no comparison between the two. The Gladden McBean Company who introduced Desert Rose in 1946, all of the pieces were hand painted and great detail. The new pieces look like they are using a machine to do the work. I shop e-bay a lot looking for certain pieces to all to my collection. It is a lot of fun. I looked for over a year to find egg cups.. Now I am searching for covered porridge bowls, very hard to find.. It is just such a fun thing and I love the dishes so very much, it brings me a lot of pleasure trying to find just that next piece...

I was on ebay today looking for a miniature creamer and sugar bowl in china and saw your Desert Rose. From now on, I'll always think of YOU when I see this pattern. ;-)

Some of my mother's friends had this pattern. I remember the delicate painting quite clearly. Ebay is wonderful for collectors.

There seems to be a china hunter in both of us! LOL

Yes I love e-bay and have gotten some great pieces, it took me over a year to find egg cups but I did and they are cherished...

Where does everyone find room for their treasures? I have a small kitchen and have to keep many of my things in the basement in plastic bins. Things are so crowded down there that I often don't even bother to bring up my serving pieces for the holidays. Well, at least recognizing I've run out of space has cut way down on my purchases.

Happy treasure hunting!

One more thing: Ever since my mother-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer and my father-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I have made it a special point to actually USE my mother's china, and other pretty antique dishes that have been kept for only "special occasions."

I realized I am a special occasion...every day!

Some of my treasures are kept in an antique hutch that I purchased when I single. The woman who had negoiated the price down from $2,000 when I first saw the hutch had to check with her husband. At that time, I had no husband to check with! And I said exactly that plus "I'll take it!!" The owners said I was meant to have it--I had literally seen in come into the store. ;-)

John built me a china cupboard that almost goes across the entire dining room wall. He said when that is full I have to stop looking for anything else.

Oh, that's so very sweet! My husband doesn't like antique furniture or anything else antique. However, there is very, very little left in this house that was here when I moved in. He's learned to appreciate the antiques. Our home is different from all of the other sterile, southwestern motif houses in our area. We love our warm and inviting home very much.
