Tucker--will he be put down

This is not a easy journal entry. Tucker is a very young pit bull who was returned for biting a 4 year old child. The child received 4 stiches. I talked to the director for over an hour pleading with her to give him a chance. I see her point of view. The liablity for our shelter... potential law suits. Her responsiblity to protect the public and volunteers. She asked me if I would take Tucker and be responsible.. My reply which I think about was No. I have 3 large pit bulls already. What if Tucker and Jack got into a fight?

We have a professional evaluating him today.. Maybe we can figure something out.. I have petted him and give him toys when he is in quarantine.

Being a shelter volunteer is never easy. We help the unwanted. It never ends.

I agree being a shelter volunteer is never easy, but if you can make a difference for the better for just one animal, it's not in vain. Perhaps Tucker or the adopter's home should have been better screened. Families with very young children are tough, I rather send our pit bulls to homes with children at least 10 years old. But especially in light of the fact that Tucker is a pit bull, he really can't afford to show any human aggression, the breed's in too much trouble now. Sad, but if he's showing some aggression and if you can't find him a very responsible home, it might be better to let him go peaceably. Check out the website www.badrap.org for great pit bull info.
