The Best Cages For Bunnies & Guinea Pigs

Tonight I thought I would write about making inexpensive cages for our beloved friends, Guinea pigs. The store bought ones are, in my opinion, way too small.

There is a site on the internet about these cages-- http://www.guineapigcages.com They give step by step instructions in making these awesome cool cages for your pet. One story, or two story. These make your pet so much happier and you can change them, rearrange them, use your imagination to create a 'condo' for your little one.

You first need 'grids'. I get mine in Target in the shelving department. They are plastic coated heavy duty wire and come in a box with round connectors, but I mostly prefer to use zip ties. It's even better when you have a handy hubby to help you construct it.

The only problem you may run into is finding COROPLAST, which is a durable heavy duty plastic to make the bottom and sides to prevent moisture and hay and stray poopies from coming out all over. You can also cut one of the grids and make very cool hay racks, ramps, or whatever, just make sure to file the sharp corners after cutting.

You can also use Rubbermaid shelving paper that has a little traction so they do not slip all over, as the coroplast is smooth. I use fleece on the bottom of my pens, which makes for easy clean up every day. Fleece remnants can also be used to create snugglies for them, by just taking some of that plastic needlepoint material, cutting it to size. Then you lay the fleece under that, fold the ends over it, fold the 2 long ends over that, roll the whole thing so that the 2 ends overlap and fasten it with large safety pins. They love to snuggle in those, also very easy to clean, just take out the plastic, remove the fleece and into the washer it goes.

Small bricks can be purchased in the garden area of any Walmart or Target for them to step up onto to keep their nails in shape and/or under the water bottles to catch that occasional drip.

I love the Yesterday's News as litter and put that in small plastic containers in the corners and under the hayrack, as they spend lots of time there and don't always want to take the time to go downstairs for their other potty.

If you make a 2 story cage for guinea pigs, always make sure that there is a side rail so they don't fall off. Sometimes, they really like to rip up and down the ramp and if they fall, they could hurt themselves. I also put a good traction type material on the ramp.

So, you can go to the site for C&C cages and get ideas of your own and print out the instructions, or you can purchase them already made.

I will post a picture of mine that belongs to Phoebe & Nyah. Other pics will be in Phoebe's profile.

It's amazing how much cheaper, yet better for your pets, these cages can be instead of those fancy ones at the pet stores.

Till next time.....
