Service Dogs in Churchs

My service dog
I am trying to start a research project based upon my experience with my local church. I am so tired of trying to go to church, and always finding them picking on me for trying to help myself. Lately, I was informed by someone who I respected (term was respected) that if I was to take my service dog to church, I would only be seeking attention. I am in a wheelchair, and my service dog has started to come in handy in helping me to help myself. With this, I really do not see that it would be to seek attention, but instead to assist me with different life skills. As she gets bigger, she will be able to help me with even more. I was wondering what other peoples views might be on this situation, as for right now I do not even know if I will be going back to church or not. I am tired of trying to appease everyone in order to make them happy and myself miserable.
At this moment of time, I have just about decided to start staying at home, and forget about the community. The more my disability makes me miserable and the more comments about my service dog, the more I probably will stop going out in public.

i am going to comment on this.

first of all, i LOVE service dogs. here in the northwest we see a lot of service dogs. i work at a VERY large company and i can assure you that at least 5 service dogs come to work each day with their owners.

as i recall, it is discrimination NOT to allow service dogs to accompany people to public places -- whether it is work, restaurants, or even churches. check out the americans with disabilities act online for further clarification of this.

with regards to your church, and the members' attitude towards your dog. please SERIOUSLY consider finding another church that has warm, caring people in it!!!!! without being TOO pejorative about your church, i think the members need to be reminded about WHAT principles their church was founded upon!!!

we have at least one service dog that comes to my church. he is more than welcome to be there. he is a part of our church community.

blessings to you, dear lady. PLEASE do not give up hope!!!
