How do you choose your "friends" ,or how do they choose you? I choose my friends because they have done one of several things. They have been very kind and receptive when something may have upset me. They have shown courage by reviewing, commenting, or posting a journal that others may not have had the "guts' to do. Or, I have been reading their comments for so long that I've come to "know and respect" them through this website. I did get a jolt recently when I requested someone's friendship. I was sent a message asking me " Why". I gave my honest answer. We're friends, but how many of us do that?? I thought that was pretty darn smart. How do you choose a "friend"????
p.s. I don't take my "friends" for granted.......

It's pretty random the way I choose my friends. I mean how many people do we actually know personally? I just joined recently and if you commented on one of my journals, I requested your friendship. I too got asked "Why?"...But aren't we all here to help animals and such? We all have something in common...we LOVE animals!

DeeDee I cannot believe someone would refuse friendship with you. O well it is thier loss. You are very compassionate person,and seem to be very concerned about our beloved pets. I would be honored to be one of your friends. Isn't it our pets that we are all here for?

Thank you, and yes, it is about the pets. I can't for the life of me understand why she needed a photo to present her legislative issues. I STILL had a voice without a photo. We are the VOICES for the animals. I'll eventually "get over it", but it wasn't fair. I'll forget about it and move on!!!
Your journals continue to get more interesting each and every (well when I get the chance :)) time I sign on - I think you have really chosen some insightful topics - certainly inspiring people to talk .
It's passion that leads to friendship here for me - the passion and love for our sheltered animals and our own beloved "girls" (or boys:))

Deedee, you're so funny. I can't imagine what kind of person would willingly deny your friendship, but then not everyone recognizes truth and grace when they see it. You're a bright, shiny light. Those who choose to remain in darkness will just end up with bruises when they bump into the wall of life!

Thank you. I guess she thought that having a photo would "bring" a voice to her cause. I found it upsetting and hurtful. I only wanted to help. SO many differing personalities and opinions here..............

Well, I'm kind of a newbie here and found it quite by accident. I did wonder how someone chose a friend. Not that it matters. I'm just nosy! :)
Frankly, I was flattered. I don't know what difference a pic makes as it tells me nothing about the person and may not even be that person. You never know any more!! LOL
I'm surprised to read that people actually decline. What difference does it make? You're tied together on an infinite journey for Pete's sake. It's all in good fun I would think.
Besides, you're so prolific on here I see a lot of things I would miss otherwise. ROFL!!!

Deedee -----LOVE the shades!!!! I like to think that people pick me as a friend, because of my honesty and forthrightness about the articles I respond to. I, too, will pick friends based on their answers to news articles and I read the journal entries. You do raise some very interesting questions in your journals! Love it! Such a foxy, shady lady! You go girl!!!!!!!! Oh, I had a people picture up, and some lady said I looked like a snob! Well, Po'g mo tho'in!

Oh I forgot about this one............I had "someone" refuse my friendship because I didn't have a photo posted at the time. She said that a photo made more of a powerful statement. She had requested friendship from zootoo folks who felt the same way that she did about the animals....... Told her that I'd contact her when I got a photo up. Well I've given it ALOT of thought and find it utterly insulting......... I think that I had a pretty powerful voice without a photo....won't be contacting her at all !!!!!! And we are here for the animals..........SHEESH.......
i think you look beautiful in your photo,and i love putting a face on someone that i share my thoughts with but for me i don't care what a person looks like.if they love and respect gods creatures and have nice things to say thats enough for me.

Like a photo matters even if one's posted. There are users who use the photos of the famous for their mug shots. Take Alicia Silverstone, for example. Zootoo flashed her drop-dead gorgeous photo over and over again on its home page--alas, her photo was being "rented" by a stranger. Once I saw that, I thought I'd like to have Gwyneth Paltrow as my profile photo. Whaddya think? I might have a better chance of landing on the home page! (As I say this, I am batting my eyes something fierce!) LOL

Thank You for your comment. It's the voice and written word that counts.........Aren't we the voice for the animals, not the face? The animals are the faces. I think she got it backwards. End of my rant.

Hi DeeDee, I think that we're all on here for the same reason. To learn about and help each other with, animals. Human pictures of yourself shouldn't be a requirement for friendship. Anyone with a brain and can read , can see the contributions that you have made to this site...That should be enough..
None of us really "know" one another on here, but we can get to know each other through our journals, comments on news, ..etc... I happen to think you're a worthy friend.
I love your picture, by the way.... Now take off those shades and I won't drop you from my friend list... hahaha

I am very good at reading people,and you can't get that from looking at some picture.

SHE had asked people to contact her and request friendship if we believed in what SHE had to say............Hope she eventually reads this. You know some people don't have digital cameras or just don't want to post photos. Who is she to be so judgemental when it comes to "anyone" wanting to help the animals???? She wasn't here long.
Well I do have a digital, obviously and I choose not to post my pic, which unless zootoo changes their rules and requires it, its my choice. But then I, as well as many others could post ANYONE's pic that we may have taken.

Just to clear one thing up...with my book signings, 100% of the proceeds go to shelters/horse rescues or other charities...I just pay for the printing fees and then cut checks to ReRun, etc...just wanted to clear that up b/c helping rescues is a very important issue to me.

Thanks--I can totally understand not wanting to get 5,000 event invites a day--just one of those things that if you don't promote it, no one knows about, but then you risk clogging everyone's inbox...I truly apologize to all those I annoyed...I'll try to target people in the immediate tri-state area in the future, but with this particular event, we had last minute people as far as Hawaii coming in! Big fundraising weekend for the Thoroughbred Charities of America. :) I get to sign books with Edgar Prado...crazy!

Yup, that was me. :) I apologize if I offended anyone by sending out the Barbaro event--it was more of an FYI and, for this particular event, a lot of people were traveling from all over the US. I figured I'd send it to everyone because you never know who is traveling where and when, and if someone was interested in attending next year, then why not? It benefits a good cause. Anyway, sorry for annoying people--in the future I wish there was a better way to see who is where when you're sending events, but I thought no harm in adding all friends to the invitation...I get a lot of random invites, but I just hit delete.

On a completely unrelated note, I used to live in Pittsburgh. Great city--miss a lot about it.
Well as you can see a few thought the same.
I live in the area too. Great city. I'm sure you will be forgiven, these really are nice ladies.
McDonald sounds familiar...how far out of Pittsburgh? I never left the city much in my 5 years there. :) Now I'm back in NJ, but thankfully in a fairly rural part where I can be near my horse. = )
It's about twenty miles west of the city, heading towards Pittsburgh National. It is pretty much a rural area.
That's Pittsburgh International Airport, sorry.
That's why it sounds familiar...I lived at that airport for flying between NJ/Pittsburgh...:)

I usually request friends from people that I have something in common with, maybe they live nearby and are active on this site and I may run into them at a dog park, or they are a valued member on this site and always have something great to bring to ZT, be it their attitude, helpfulness, advice, or just kind words.

In the beginning I tried to add anyone as "friends" who was trying to win a shelter makeover for "my" shelter. Some people accepted my friendship request, some didn't. Funny thing, nobody asked why I wanted to be friends and nobody messaged me about it.
Now I've become much more selective about my friends. For the most part I don't want some weirdos to be friends (LOL!) although everyone is weird in their own way. And almost all of us are certifiably nuts about our furkids, which is great!

I lean towards a more moderate view and wouldn't actively seek out friendship with an animal rights activist, I'm much more in favor of animal welfare. Animal welfare certainly isn't a popular stance on zootoo, though!

Oh believe me, I get the "weirdo" thing !!!!!!!
I haven't added any friends on this website because I am a very shy person. So if anyone woule like to be on my friends list I would appreciate it. You have no idea how much it took for me to write this. I life a friend has to stick with you no matter what. I have a few friends I made in college and 2-3 I made from kindergarten.

I love this journal entry!. I have requested friendship from people and some have requested mine. Usually, I have read their journals and their comments on Pet News, before I do so.In alot of ways, you can become close to people on this site, that way. I have learned so much about a variety of animals, on here, from many people on my friend list.
I am loving this site more, as time goes on..

Usually it's because of something they posted or something I posted that caught the attention of the other. I am still fairly new here, but have connected with a lot of people that I feel I have a lot in common with. Some people just don't get "it" when you talk about how much you love your pets-but everyone here does and it's nice to tell a story about one of my dogs and there are so many people that understand and find it interesting. My daughter always says she hopes I never get in the position that I have to chose between her and Sugar because she's not sure if she'll win. HA! I enjoy reading everyone's journals and comments on mine, it's nice to know there are other people out there that are as crazy about their dogs as I am!

I am still relatively new to Zootoo and don't have a large collection of friends. But, when I do send friend requests....it usually is because I liked a journal, comment , or an adorable picture of a "furbaby". For the most part, zootoo has been a complete pleasure and I have made some "cyber friends" that I always look forward to chatting with...and learning from. It would be quite thought provoking to be asked "why"...I am glad the question was satisfied and you have a new friend....this one will keep you on your toes.

that was very "fresh" .to ask why? i request friends because i just feel that all of us on zootoo share the same love for our babies,and i enjoy chatting with people that love animals.and also if someone is nice enough and takes the time to comment on my babies or answer a question, that to me is an opening for a friendship.i always accept and take it from there.and so far all my zootoo "friends" are real genuine and sweet people!! isn't that what it's all about? our shared love for all creatures big and small.

I think that she was being "cautious". This is the only discussion group that I've ever participated in so I'm still "green" around the edges and learning not to be naive'. You would think that this site would be very safe, but one never knows...........
you're right ,about people being cautious.i guess i still have the belief that there are still good people out there,but i also feel if people are going to be a member of a website such as this that they should be open to new friendships and ideas.because in the end we all share the love for our babies.it's also sad that the way the world is today that there ARE people that have bad intentions.btw...deedee, i am glad you're my friend lol!!!
I choose friends who have pets like mine (like Pippin!), but mostly I choose by what they contribute. If they have thoughtful, and helpful reviews/comments/etc., I will usually add them and get to know them through the site. If they have nothing to offer, or seem to be a negative/strange person, I just won't add them. I learn a lot from the people on my friends list and what they have to say. :)

I make my decisions in much of the same way... you see some people (and I am not knocking them, it's their own decisions!) who request everyone and anyone just to have a ton of "friends", yet I like to base it more on who seems to be as passionate about animals as me, or by the comments that are similar to mine or even the pictures sometimes. It took me a while to get past my 1st friend on here (she is my friend in real life too!), just because I was checking things/people out! :)

I coose my friends much the same way you do Deedee. I base it on some of the pics of pets/interesting journals and or comments on petnews articles. I pop on and off zootoo almost daily and find it to be a warm, friendly place, and feel connected with all of the others who are as fanatical about animals as I am :) I also feel there is a boundless capacity of the human heart here, where folks truely care about the welfare of animals and that is what attracted me.
I agree .I like my friends list I see something they found and I may of missed.And if someone adds a picture I will know.I met some wonderful people here.Great stories.Zootoo is a wonderful place to chat and make friends that care so much about animals.
