playing in the Golden Club
Orontes was a character in the Aeneid by Virgil. He went down with his ship when Juno convinced the winds to sink the fleet of Aeneas. The seed of golden club sinks in its vessel also. The Or in Orontium adds another layer of meaning to the genus name - it is French for gold, the color of the flowers, Aquaticum is simply Latin for "growing in the water."
Both the berry and the roots are edible, but must be thoroughly dried and boiled and rinsed before eating.
North Americans used the dried ground root for flour and boiled the fruit as a pea-like vegetable.
